Southernmost Vietnam-Cambodia Border Checkpoint: Prek Chak - Xa Xia
When talking about the southernmost border checkpoint between Vietnam and Cambodia, many people might not be familiar with this difficult-to-pronounce name,Prek Chak - Xa Xiawhich is a small crossing point between Kiên Giang Province of Vietnam and Kep Province of Cambodia. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit here myself, so I would like to share my real experience, including the lifestyle and atmosphere around this checkpoint.
Getting to Prek Chak - Xa Xia Checkpoint
On the Cambodian side, this checkpoint is not far from Kep and Kampot, charming tourist towns with a simple Khmer vibe. If you are in Kampot, you can easily rent a tuk-tuk or motorcycle to get to the checkpoint. I checked the prices; tuk-tuks cost around 15-20 USD, which is quite affordable for this border crossing. I haven't tried the motorcycle myself, but it seems convenient.
On the Vietnamese side, the checkpoint is only 7 kilometers from Ha Tien city. I took a motorbike taxi from the city to the checkpoint for less than 100 baht. I must say the travel here is very comfortable, and along the way, you can see the simple yet charming lifestyle of the border people.
Unique Atmosphere and Border Crossing Experience
Upon arriving at Prek Chak - Xa Xia, what I, mr.hotsia, noticed was the peacefulness and naturalness that differ from larger checkpoints in Vietnam. This is a remote and very friendly checkpoint. The officers here charge a small fee when crossing; I was asked for about 200 baht, which is unusual for Vietnamese border checkpoints that normally do not charge. I smiled and said, “คงก๋อเตี่ยวโหล่ย” (meaning I have no money), and the officer understood without pressure, so I did not pay.
Another thing I liked was the ease of crossing here. No complicated forms to fill out, just use your passport orPassportis enough. For Thai travelers, the passport can be used to travel and stay in Vietnam for up to 30 days, provided the passport is valid for more than 6 months. This convenience helps travelers who want to experience the border atmosphere without complexity.
Casinos and Accommodation on the Cambodian Side
If you are interested in entertainment, the Cambodian side in Kep Province and Ha Tien city has 4-5 casinos. The largest and most famous isHa Tien Vegas Entertainment Resortor Ha Tien Vegas Resort and Casino, which offers both accommodation and full casino services. Those who want to try their luck or relax can exchange money to play within a set limit and stay for free at this resort.
But for me, mr.hotsia, although I have crossed this checkpoint many times, I have never played at the casino. The last time, I took a motorbike back to stay in Ha Tien city on the Vietnamese side because I prefer the small seaside town atmosphere and the lifestyle that remains simple and traditional.
Recommended Food and Lifestyle in Kep and Kampot Provinces
If you visit Kep and Kampot provinces, don't forget to try the local dishes with rich and unique flavors, such asDry Khmer Noodles in Kampotwhich I, mr.hotsia, have tried and must say the taste is so good I had to remember it. Or if you want to try a special dish like Khmer roasted duck in Phnom Penh, there isa video clip showing Khmer roasted duckthat clearly presents Khmer food and eating culture.
Additionally, the markets in Kampot are lively and full of fresh ingredients and local foods that are hard to find in big cities. Walking through the markets and chatting with vendors opens a new perspective for travelers who enjoy deep, authentic experiences.
