Sunset in Kratie Province: The Charm of the Mekong River in Golden Light
If you ask mr.hotsia where in Cambodia has the most beautiful sunset views, Kratie Province is the answer I recommend without hesitation. The town is located on the eastern bank of the Mekong River, so when the sun sets, the golden light reflecting on the vast water surface creates an unforgettable scene.
The Mekong River in Kratie is very wide. Although there are several large islands stretching parallel to the town, the river's width still allows the sunset light to reflect broadly across the water. I vividly remember in April 2012, sitting by the Mekong River in the evening as the sunlight gradually faded. The river seemed to be coated in shimmering gold, reflecting an orange-pink sky. It made me feel like time had stopped for a moment.
Kratie Province itself is peaceful and quiet, unlike the busy big tourist cities. Here, you can experience the true riverside lifestyle. Most locals live along the river, working in trade and fishing. There is also a small riverside market where you can stop to try local dishes, especially chicken rice porridge and traditional grilled foods.Food in Kratie ProvinceI have tried these dishes and can say they are rich in flavor and very tasty.
Riverside Lifestyle and Diversity of Kratie Province
Kratie Province is located in northeastern Cambodia, bordering the Mekong River which flows over 140 kilometers through this area. The Mekong here is not just a large river but home to the rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins, which mr.hotsia has seen at Kampee village about 15 kilometers north of Kratie town.Irrawaddy Dolphins in the Mekong River, Kratie Province, CambodiaThis is another spot nature tourists should visit.
Besides the beautiful nature, Kratie Province also has several ancient temples, such as the Sarsar Mouyrouy pagoda built in the 16th century, along with other old temples that well reflect the stories of ancient Khmer civilization.Traveling Kratie Province 2012This article I wrote compiles various aspects of this province comprehensively.
Recommended Activities and Local Food by the Mekong River
For those who enjoy a chill riverside atmosphere, I recommend coming in the late afternoon before sunset to sip on smoothies such asAvocado Smoothie in Kratie Provinceat a riverside smoothie shop, which is affordable and very refreshing. The smoothies here are made from fresh fruit with a special Khmer recipe that impressed me a lot.
When the sun starts to shade, try walking around the small riverside market selling local foods like chicken rice porridge, curry, and grilled items such as whole grilled snakehead fish, grilled chicken, and grilled pork. Interestingly, locals here eat with steamed rice, not sticky rice like in our country.Food in Kratie ProvinceThe flavors are simple yet rich and harmonious. If you want souvenirs, Khmer banana chips sold at the town entrance are another favorite of mine.Dried Bananas from Kratie ProvinceCrispy, sweet, and fragrant, they make a perfect souvenir.
