THAI in Koh Kong: The lifestyle of Thai people in Koh Kong by mr.hotsia

Koh Kong is a coastal province of Cambodia that many may not be very familiar with because the name “Koh Kong” sounds like a large island such as Phuket or Koh Chang. In reality, Koh Kong is not a large isolated island but a province with mainland coastal areas and some small islands sharing the same name. This is where I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel through and stay one night to gather details and experience the lifestyle of Thai people living in this province.

Koh Kong is located in the northwest of Cambodia, bordering Botum Sakor Province to the north and surrounded by Kampong Speu and Kampot provinces to the east. To the southwest, it borders the Gulf of Thailand and Sihanoukville city. The province has a population of about 130,000 people, mostly Khmer around 75%, with the remaining 25-30% being indigenous Thai people who have lived here for a long time. I personally met and spoke with Thai people in Koh Kong, which made the image of this province much clearer.

Traveling and Relaxing in Koh Kong: Gateway to Cambodia’s Coast

Traveling to Koh Kong is quite convenient as there is a main road connecting to Sihanoukville, a famous coastal tourist city. I, mr.hotsia, chose to stay one night in Koh Kong town to capture the atmosphere and explore the local market. Accommodation can be booked online or by walk-in, with options ranging from budget guesthouses to comfortable mid-sized hotels.

The atmosphere in Koh Kong town is not as hectic as big cities but lively with grocery stores, fresh markets, and restaurants blending Khmer and Thai styles harmoniously. Interestingly, most Thai-owned shops I saw were large grocery stores and bakeries, which clearly reflect the lifestyle and trading culture of Thai people in Koh Kong.

Thai People in Koh Kong: An Ancient Community Preserving Thai Identity

When I spoke with the local Thai residents here, I was impressed by their warmth and strong connection to the Thai language and culture. Although living in Cambodia for a long time, Thai people in Koh Kong still use Thai in daily communication and preserve some Thai customs such as cooking, dressing, and organizing traditional ceremonies.

In the morning market of Koh Kong, I saw Thai vendors selling homemade bread and traditional snacks, as well as fresh local produce. The exchange of goods between Khmer and Thai people happens daily. I also tasted local dishes with a mild, fragrant Khmer spice flavor but similar to western Thai cuisine, such as special local-style tom yum noodles.

Coastal Lifestyle and Local Markets

Koh Kong is not only the town but also includes a small island named Koh Kong, where locals still live simply with the sea and nature. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to walk along the beach and talk with local fishermen who shared that fishing is the main livelihood supporting their families. Many still use traditional hand fishing methods and inherited local equipment.

The market in Koh Kong town is another place I recommend visiting as it is a center for trading fresh food, vegetables, fruits, and daily necessities. I witnessed a true blend of Thai-Khmer culture in both food and conversations in languages understood by both sides.

Connecting to Other Travel Routes in Cambodia

Koh Kong is also a convenient transit point for travelers heading to Sihanoukville or Kampot provinces, which are destinations with interesting attractions and beautiful beaches. If you want more information about Koh Kong province and travel routes within Cambodia, mr.hotsia recommends reading the articleKoh Kong Travel Informationthat I have compiled in detail.

For those who love exploring Thai culture abroad, visiting Koh Kong is a great opportunity. This place is not just an ordinary border province but a hub of Thai lifestyle that still preserves identity and strong ties to their hometown through real community interactions.

Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia

Koh Kong opened a new perspective for me, mr.hotsia, showing that Thai people living in Cambodia still strongly preserve and pass on Thai culture despite being in a neighboring country with different language and traditions. I invite everyone interested in traveling and learning about the real lifestyle of Thai people abroad to visit Koh Kong, a coastal Cambodian province full of stories and discoveries.
