Travel to Pursat Province, Cambodia: A riverside town with a simple way of life
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit Pursat Province, sometimes pronounced Po Sat by locals, a province in western Cambodia that few people know or have heard of. Pursat is Cambodia's fourth largest province, bordering Thailand and surrounded by the provinces of Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Speu, and is also near Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.
My journey began in Kampong Chhnang Province in the morning, driving along National Road 5 connecting to Pursat city. After about two and a half hours, I arrived in Pursat town, located on the Pursat River that flows through the center, creating a peaceful and charming small-town atmosphere without rush.
As soon as I got off the car, I strolled around Pursat town and found that most houses still retain their traditional old style, including simple wooden houses and ancient rice granaries in the town center, reflecting a lifestyle deeply connected to agriculture and rice farming.
Pursat Market was my intended destination. The market is larger and livelier than I expected. Even though it was late morning, the market was still bustling with diverse people, including local Khmer and ethnic minorities living in the province. I tried simple street food at a fried rice and krosang stall, local dishes of Pursat, with bold flavors and fresh ingredients from the region.
Another memorable experience was witnessing the genuine daily life of the locals. I stopped for a shave at a small roadside barber shop. Talking with locals helped me understand the simplicity and warmth hidden in this town. Although Pursat is not a major tourist destination, it has its own charm that I want Thai people to experience.
About 35 kilometers from Pursat town is Tonle Sap, home to a Khmer village living on floating houses. This village is a famous tourist spot in Pursat Province. Although I haven't had the chance to visit this time, other travelers told me the atmosphere there is beautiful and uniquely distinctive.
If you travel through Kampong Chhnang or nearby Koh Kong Province, don't forget to stop by Pursat. This route offers a perfect blend of diverse culture and nature.Koh Kong ProvinceA province I have visited, also interesting and not far from Pursat.
For those planning to travel to Cambodia, besides famous destinations like Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, I, mr.hotsia, recommend opening your heart to experience the simple rural lifestyle in Pursat. Here you will see another side of Cambodia rarely talked about but full of tangible charm.
If you want to see the market atmosphere and lifestyle in Pursat in detail, watch the video I made atPursat Market, CambodiaI truly strolled, talked with locals, and tasted food in the mr.hotsia style so you can feel like you are there yourself.
