Pailin City Cambodia: A charming small valley town with stories from mr.hotsia

When talking about Cambodian border provinces that I, mr.hotsia, have crossed to experience, Pailin City, or as the Khmer call it "Bai Lin," is a town not to be overlooked. Although it is not a famous tourist city like Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, it has a unique charm that made me want to share my firsthand experience in detail.

Pailin is located in Khlong Pailin Province, only 26 kilometers from the Banpakkard border checkpoint in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. This means traveling from the Thai side is very convenient. If you travel from Banpakkard checkpoint, a taxi to Pailin costs about 100 baht. If starting from Battambang, there are various bus options available, costing around a little over a hundred baht. Importantly, the road is very good, and the scenery along the way is as beautiful as anywhere else.

Red Khmer base city and a different atmosphere

Pailin was a stronghold of the Khmer Rouge in the past. I, mr.hotsia, have heard stories and seen historical remnants through the eyes of the local people here. Many might think a small town like this has nothing interesting, but for me, the peace and beauty of a town nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains is very impressive. The atmosphere here reminds me of a small town full of mystery and historical stories.

Here is Wat Phnom Yad, a newly completed temple. I had the chance to see Burmese craftsmen working diligently on this temple. This temple is one place no visitor to Pailin should miss, as besides its beautiful architecture, it is also a spiritual center for the local community.

The real story about malaria tourists should know

One thing I, mr.hotsia, must warn all travelers about is drug-resistant malaria in this area. Pailin is notorious for highly drug-resistant malaria parasites. Local health officials told me they collect blood samples from suspected patients daily to send for testing in Thailand because the parasites here are severe and drug-resistant. If you plan to go outside the town to experience nature or the forest, you must be very careful. If not necessary, I do not recommend staying overnight here.

But if you really need to stay or rest along the way, don't forget to bring mosquito repellent spray. Hotels in Pailin are not very expensive, about 200 baht per night for a fan room, with a slight increase for air-conditioned rooms. When I stayed atPailin Guesthousewhich is considered the best accommodation in town, it offered a simple, clean, and friendly atmosphere.

Morning fresh market and local lifestyle

One morning in Pailin, I, mr.hotsia, took a walk in the town's fresh market. The market here is not as lively or colorful as markets on the Thai side but has unusual and local items rarely seen in Thailand, such as native vegetables, spices, or seafood that is not as fresh as on the Thai side. It was a good experience to see the lifestyle of Khmer people in this small town.

For those who like to try new foods, Pailin has many interesting dishes, especiallyKhmer food of Pailin citywhich I have tried and written about in other articles, such as Khmer stir-fry or Khmer-style Pad Thai. They sell instant noodle stir-fry that is so delicious I want to call Khmer stir-fry the city's signature dish.

Cost of living and transportation in town

If you want to go out at night, Pailin has a fair amount of tourist spots. I recommend renting a motorcycle from a driver who speaks Thai, which will make communication easier and help you discover the best places in town. Transportation costs are not expensive at all, which is a highlight that makes tourists feel comfortable and able to access the local lifestyle well.

Cross-border travel and connections to nearby routes

For those interested in traveling onward to Battambang or Prum town (Prum is about 26 kilometers from Pailin), using Banpakkard checkpoint is very convenient and hassle-free. This is an international checkpoint not limited to Thai and Khmer nationals. You can enter with a passport without a visa for stays not exceeding 14 days.

If you want to see the atmosphere of crossing at Banpakkard checkpoint and Pailin city, mr.hotsia has recorded a video inBanpakkard border crossing video clipwhich will give you a clearer picture that this route is suitable for adventurous travelers and those who want to experience the culture of both sides of the border.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia

Pailin is not a city for tourists seeking convenience or nightlife. But if you are someone who likes rugged travel, studying history, experiencing local life, and not afraid of minor issues like malaria, Pailin is a truly unique and interesting destination.

I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing well for health and travel and don't forget to try Khmer food here, which has a distinctive flavor. For anyone wanting to deeply experience the charm of the Thai-Cambodian border, Pailin is a city you must visit at least once in your life.
