Experience Traveling in Kep Province, Cambodia with mr.hotsia
When it comes to coastal provinces in Cambodia, many people probably think of Kampot first. But for me, mr.hotsia,Kepis quite an interesting destination. Kep is a seaside town located only about 50 kilometers from Kampot. In fact, the pepper plantations that tourists often visit from Kampot are actually located within Kep Province.
The Charm of Kep's Coast and Its Unique Lifestyle
Kep Province has a beach calledKep Beachwhich is a sandy beach but not very wide. Most of the coastline is rocky rather than sandy, giving it a natural atmosphere that differs from the beaches in Thailand that we are familiar with. Most tourists who come here choose to eat fresh seafood by the sea and enjoy a chill sea view. I noticed both Khmer locals and some foreign tourists come here, but it is not crowded, making it suitable for those who prefer tranquility over hustle and bustle.
Convenient Travel from Kampot to Kep
For travel, mr.hotsia recommends buying a day tour from Kampot directly to Kep. Accommodation in Kep is spread out and not convenient for walking like other seaside towns, so having a private vehicle is necessary. I chose to stay in Kampot and take a bus to Kep because the distance is not far. The road is a two-lane road, so traffic is not heavy. Importantly, along the way, you can see countryside scenery and locals plowing fields using oxen, which is a rare sight in Thailand nowadays.
Accommodation and Seaside Atmosphere in Kep
Most accommodations in Kep are simple-style resorts located separately along the coastal road or the city ring road. The atmosphere is quiet and suitable for relaxation. However, if you don't have a private car, it might be a bit inconvenient. For those interested in booking accommodation in Kep, I recommend checkingAgodabecause it offers a variety of options and good prices.
Taste Fresh Seafood and Delicious Street Food
The food in Kep impressed me a lot, especially the street food stalls owned by Khmer people who used to live in Koh Kong, speak Thai, and cook incredibly delicious dishes. I recommend the dishBeef Offal Soupwhich is slow-cooked until tender, fragrant with spices, and tastes great with hot steamed rice. It’s so delicious that I had to give it a thumbs up. The price is also very reasonable, comparable to or cheaper than in Thailand.
The fresh seafood here is equally excellent. The crabs are kept in sea traps, and when ordered, they are caught fresh, weighed, and sold right there. You get to eat fresh crab without worrying about old stock. I also tried grilled squid, which impressed me with its fresh sweetness and well-balanced seasoning. For those interested in unusual dishes, check outKep Ang Khmer, Frog Stuffed in Its Own Leg and Grilled, Grill Froga rare dish I tried and documented on hotsia.com.
Key Attractions and Landmarks in Kep
The most popular tourist spot isKep Beachwhich is a sandy beach suitable for swimming. There is a pier extending into the sea and a large white nude female statue standing prominently. This statue is calledKHUON BOUNNA AN SOTMEAwhich is a distinctive landmark and a must-photograph spot for visitors.
Besides Kep Beach, there is alsoKra Tang Islandwhich is a natural tourist spot, and the Kep Zoo located not far from the coast. Additionally, along the seaside, there are seating areas and statues of horses, rhinos, and crabs that represent local conservation and culture in Kep.
At the far end of Kep Beach, there is a small fish market where you can see locals cooking fresh sea crabs over charcoal stoves and buy them to eat immediately. I tried fragrant coconut and grilled squid at a seaside stall; the freshness and taste were so good that I want to go back and eat again.
Lifestyle and Coastal Salt Farming
Another impressive sight from my trip to Kep was the coastal salt farms with vast, clean white salt fields. During the salt harvesting season, you can see the vibrant colors and hardworking locals. The salt from Kep is not only used domestically but also exported abroad. The tour I bought from Kampot included a visit to these salt farms.
Travel Tips for Kep and Connecting Routes
The most convenient way to travel in Kep is to buy a tour from Kampot or rent a motorcycle from Kampot to explore. I am not sure if there are many motorcycle rental shops in Kep. Most tourists who come to Kep continue on to Hatien Province in Vietnam and then to Phu Quoc Island, a major tourist island in Vietnam. This is the route I plan to travel as well.
Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia
Kep Province is another destination I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend for those who like quiet seaside travel, fresh seafood, and want to experience authentic Khmer coastal life. It has its unique charm with rocky beaches, unusual statues, a small fish market, and distinctive salt farms. Travel is convenient if coming from Kampot and it is also a good starting point for continuing travel to Vietnam.
