Travel Hunan Province: A land of diverse landscapes and profound culture

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. This time I will take you to explore Hunan Province, one of the important provinces in southern China, near the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and not far from Thailand. This makes the province charming and familiar to Thai people like us, who want to experience it firsthand.

The capital of Hunan Province is Changsha, which is a center of development and culture blending modernity with historical traces. The province is located south of Dongting Lake, a large lake connected to the Yangtze River, an important river dividing northern and southern China and flowing out to the sea at Shanghai.

Nature and Diverse Climate

Hunan features diverse terrain, including vast lakes like Dongting Lake, which has a water system connected to the Yangtze River that helps control water volume and carries sediment to enrich the land every year. There are also many beautiful limestone mountains and valleys, especially the Wulingyuan area, famous from the movie Avatar, which I had the chance to visit and will share more about in this article.

The weather is another charm of Hunan. Summers are moderately hot and humid, but winters can be very cold with snow in many areas I visited. I remember during this trip there was both snow and rain. The rain here is not as heavy as in Thailand. The average annual temperature is 16-18 degrees Celsius, which is just right for those who like to travel without extreme heat or cold.

Ethnic Diversity and Culture

Hunan Province is home to over 56 ethnic groups, ranking sixth in China for ethnic minority populations. The Miao (Hmong) people live in many remote mountainous areas, making this place rich in diverse lifestyles and cultures. This is a learning source I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy because experiencing the real local way of life makes the journey uniquely lively.

Must-Visit Attractions in Hunan

When it comes to the most popular tourist destinations among Thais in this province, it has to beZhangjiajieA place famous for its towering limestone mountains, which served as the filming location for the movie Avatar. I experienced heavy snow on Tianmen Mountain myself, and it felt like being in a fantasy world.

Another city that impressed me greatly isFenghuang Ancient TownAn old town located by the river. If you enjoy tasting street food and hearing the lively sounds of an ancient town, don't forget to stroll alongFenghuang Ancient Town Food StreetHere you will find a variety of local dishes, especially the grilled giant catfish, which I tried and loved. Most restaurants focus on hot grilled dishes, perfect for the cold weather during that season.

Changsha Capital and Historical Sites

Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, perfectly blends modernity and history. It is the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong. Shaoshan Village, located just 30 kilometers from Changsha city, is another spot I highly recommend visiting to learn about deep Chinese history and culture.

There is also the ancient town of Hongjiang not far from Huaihua city. Although not as prominent as Fenghuang, it offers another interesting perspective of an old town for those who enjoy exploring unique historic cities.

Traveling in Hunan Province

For me, mr.hotsia, on my latest trip here, I chose to take an overnight train from Guangzhou to Huaihua city, which was a new and fun experience because the train departed at night and arrived in the morning. Then I continued by car to Fenghuang Ancient Town, Hongjiang Ancient Town, Zhangjiajie, and Changsha in sequence. Traveling like this requires good preparation, especially for communication. Using Chinese characters or asking staff to help book tickets is convenient. Or if you have a friend who speaks Chinese like my teammate Marpin, it makes things much easier.

Souvenirs and Local Foods to Try

When you arrive at Fenghuang Ancient Town, I, mr.hotsia, recommend buying souvenirs such as well-packaged duck blood cake, Hunan chili peppers that are flavorful but not too spicy, and traditional Fenghuang caramel, all with unique characteristics. As for local food, I highly recommend Chinese-style chicken dishes like Zhengxin Chicken Steak (正新鸡排), which I recently tried at a famous restaurant in Changsha, and Beggar's Chicken, traditionally cooked wrapped in clay until tender and fragrant. Hunan Province is a land I, mr.hotsia, find very diverse and charming. It has beautiful landscapes with vast lakes, spectacular limestone mountains, ancient towns full of stories, and a rich cultural diversity of ethnic groups that have preserved their traditional lifestyles in fascinating ways.

Visiting here allowed me to learn and experience things that cannot be found in books or on the internet. Convenient travel by high-speed trains and airplanes makes this province easily accessible.
