The southern accommodation area of Surabaya is near the port. I walked around and even though prices are cheap, I don't recommend staying there. Stay in the area I suggest, which is not far from the tourist service center and not far from the city center. However, avoid walking in some spots where I saw people sleeping on pedestrian bridges and youths sitting in dark areas. I think taking a taxi is best. Recommended hotels are Hotel 88 and Hotel Kenongo. From my city exploration, many areas seem deserted and unsafe. Some spots have multiple CCTV cameras lined up.

This hotel was fully booked when I went, but I felt it wasn't very welcoming; the owner seemed serious and didn't smile much. I didn't stay there, so I think it might not work out.
