Due to its elevation above sea level, this place is cool all year round (currently 21 degrees Celsius). It is a popular destination for Indonesian tourists with very few foreigners, making information hard to find. The easiest way to get to Sarangan Lake is by taxi from Madiun city, costing 150,000 Rupiah as I did, or take a bus from Madiun bus station to Magetan city for 3,000 Rupiah, then a small vehicle to the lake for another 45 minutes costing 1,500 Rupiah. See travel information from various cities below.
Below is information I gathered from the web. It is very popular among Indonesian tourists with 40 accommodations available. There are speedboats for lake rides and horses for riding around the lake. I walked around the lake and found nearly a hundred satay stalls (maybe a bit exaggerated). Many young Indonesian couples ride motorcycles here. This town is breezy with good air, perfect for a vacation. Most Indonesian tourists come for a day trip. When I wrote this, I was staying in this town.
Food here is cheaper than in Bali. Various nasi dishes cost 15,000 Rupiah or about 45 Baht, which I find reasonable. I didn't eat around the lake, just at a restaurant in front of my accommodation. Currently, I am staying at NUSA INDAH-B. Hotels here are quite similar, with bathrooms having scoop-style showers; some rooms have Western toilets but most have squat toilets. During holidays, it can be crowded and fully booked. You can book hotels in advance. I recommend booking hotels in Sarangan here. Accommodation costs about 330 Baht per night. The room shown in the photo is quite luxurious.
I plan to stay quietly for at least three nights, waiting for my funds before moving on to Solo, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, and then Sumatra. Mr.Hotsia's exciting trip on May 14, 2014.
