Banyuwangi, East Java: Gateway to the Blue Flames of the Volcano
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to truly experience the atmosphere of Banyuwangi Regency, located at the far end of Java Island in Indonesia. Let me tell you, this place is not just a transit point to Bali but a city with its own charm, full of fascinating local lifestyles.
Banyuwangi is considered the gateway to Bali and an important ferry port connecting Java and nearby islands. Most tourists head to see The Ijen Plateau or the famous volcanic crater known for its blue flames caused by burning sulfur gas in the early morning. But for me, this city has more stories than you might think.
Atmosphere and Life in Banyuwangi
Upon arriving in Banyuwangi, the hot and humid feeling hit me quickly, even at night. I stayed at a hotel in the city center and must say the power went out that night. It was so hot I could barely go out for a walk, but it was an experience that clearly reflected the real life of this city.
The morning market in Banyuwangi opens from 2 AM to 7 AM. It is a fascinating hub of local life, featuring bright yellow baskets of sulfur for sale. This is where locals bring various products to sell, including highly recommended local foods. I spent time exploring the market filled with the aroma of spices and the morning chatter of vendors.
Travel and Tours to The Ijen Plateau
Most tourists come to Banyuwangi for tours to The Ijen Plateau, which start at 1 AM. The car rental costs about 800,000 rupiah (around 2,400 baht) per vehicle, accommodating up to 6 passengers. I, mr.hotsia, traveled with three friends but due to budget constraints, I did not join the tour. My friends, Mr. Chanchai from faifaathai.com and Ms. Jib Marpin, went together and shared that it was a truly exciting experience.
If you are interested in this tour, I recommend booking in advance at Hotel BARU where I stayed. It has a fair number of foreign tourists and offers easy access to tours of the volcanic crater. The hotel is near the morning market, making travel and finding food much easier.
Accommodation and Transportation in Banyuwangi
Banyuwangi offers hotels and accommodations in two main areas: near the morning market and main road, and along inner streets. I recommend staying near the morning market for its lively atmosphere, with restaurants and shops around to explore, and a closer look at local life. Accommodation prices start at about 300 baht and up.
If you travel from Bali and plan to continue to Surabaya, many people buy combined tickets for boat, bus, and train without staying overnight in Banyuwangi. But if you have time for a night, staying here lets you experience real local life and prepare comfortably for the early morning volcano climb.
Connecting Travel in East Java
After traveling from Banyuwangi by train to Surabaya, I recalled experiences I had previously inMadiun, East Javaa town along the way with the simple charm of Indonesian life. There I learned that East Java is not only about big cities or well-known tourist spots but also small towns like Banyuwangi waiting for us to discover their genuine local beauty.
Local Food and Culture
In Banyuwangi, I tasted local foods at the morning market, including crispy fried bananas and traditional dishes made with fresh spices. I still remember the warm and simple atmosphere of dining here, similar to what I saw in videos of Indonesian farmers on Bali Island. This clipshows a lifestyle deeply connected with nature.
For street food lovers, you must try the various dishes sold along the streets of Banyuwangi. This atmosphere reminded me of the true joy of traveling: fully experiencing local life and flavors.
Summary of the Banyuwangi Experience
Banyuwangi may not be the most luxurious or modern city in Java, but for me, mr.hotsia, who loves traveling and experiencing real local life, this is a destination that offers a truly close and warm feeling. Seeing the morning market, strolling around the city, and preparing for the volcano climb to see the blue flames of The Ijen Plateau are memories I will cherish for a long time.
If you have time or plan to travel from Bali to Surabaya, consider spending a night in Banyuwangi and explore this different world of southern Java. I guarantee you will have a unique experience and another memorable story in your travel journey.
