Backpacking Indonesia 24/27: Exploring the Bajawa Village Life, Flores Island, Indonesia

I, mr.hotsia, have just returned from a journey that made my heart race once again. Solo backpacking on Flores Island, Indonesia. This time, I delved deeply into the lifestyle of the Bajawa people, an indigenous group who still strongly preserve their traditional culture. The rural atmosphere and simplicity of life on Flores Island made me feel as if I had traveled back in time to an era before the world became so complicated.

The journey began in the town of Bajawa, located on the central highlands of Flores Island. The weather here is pleasantly cool, unlike the typical tropical island image. I chose to travel mainly on foot and by bicycle to slowly experience the surrounding communities. Most locals still live simply in the traditional style of indigenous tribes. They live in traditional wooden houses with thatched roofs, which are a true hallmark of Bajawa.

Unique Lifestyle and Culture

Bajawa is another fascinating tribe in Indonesia. Here, I witnessed ancient rituals and traditions passed down through generations, such as meaningful traditional wedding ceremonies and weaving, which is an important art form of the Bajawa people. I also visited the morning market where I sampled local dishes like simple yet intensely flavored rice with side dishes and traditional foods made from natural ingredients around the island.

I spoke with many locals here. Many said that even in this fast-changing world, they still want to preserve their identity and community as much as possible. Images of Bajawa people working with their hands or children playing in the streets are memories I will always cherish.

The Route to Flores Island and Valley Adventures

Flores Island is located in the East Nusa Tenggara region, which boasts amazing cultural and natural diversity. I have previously written about the Baliem Valley in Western New Guinea, further east in Indonesia. If you are interested in stories about Stone Age tribes and fascinating history, try reading the articleCannibal Tribethat I once shared, which will open a new perspective on traveling through tribes that still maintain traditional ways of life in Indonesia.

Back to Flores, I chose to travel by local bus from the main town to Bajawa. The route passes through mountains and lush green rice fields. It was a tiring but rewarding journey because I saw unspoiled natural scenery. I also stopped to observe local farmers diligently planting rice, a powerful and impressive sight.

Local Food and Fresh Market in Bajawa

One experience I, mr.hotsia, never miss is tasting local food. A small roadside restaurant in Bajawa that I stopped at had a signature dish of rice with crispy pork seasoned with local spices. Food here often uses fresh ingredients from vegetable gardens and the surrounding sea.

Additionally, the Bajawa fresh market is another must-visit place. I walked around selecting exotic fruits never seen in big cities and chatted warmly with local vendors. It was a great opportunity to understand the simple life and true happiness of the Bajawa people.

Summary of the Journey and Impressions

Visiting Bajawa, Flores Island, this time for me, mr.hotsia, was a new perspective on travel that goes deeper than just visiting beautiful places. It was about learning culture, lifestyle, and experiencing the reality of a tribe that still firmly preserves its roots.

If you want to experience Indonesia from a different angle than the usual image, I recommend trying this backpacking route once.
