The Lanten Tribe in Luang Namtha Province, Laos: A Journey and Simple Life
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Luang Namtha Province, located in northern Laos, known as a gathering place for many ethnic tribes. One tribe that impressed me greatly was the “Lanten Tribe,” whom I encountered by chance while traveling from Muang Long to the Laos-Myanmar border.
After renting a car from Muang Long town, I drove along the Ban Chiangkok route by the Mekong River, opposite Myanmar. This route is not only a border connection but also led me to experience the lifestyle and culture of the remote Lanten community, far from the bustle of big cities.
Life of the Lanten People: Simple Yet Colorful
Just 10 kilometers from Muang Long, my car stopped at the Lanten village. I saw most villagers dressed in elegant yet simple dark blue tribal costumes. They continue to preserve a traditional lifestyle closely connected to nature in an amazing way.
I strolled around the village and saw many Lanten women dyeing fabrics with natural colors from local plants and materials. The fabrics drying in the yard reflected their dedication and craftsmanship. Children played joyfully, creating a warm and happy atmosphere rarely found in big cities.
Additionally, I had the honor to sit and exchange stories with the Lanten people and saw their ancient books recording unique stories and culture. Despite my efforts to find information about this tribe from various sources, including the internet and tribal books I collected from museums in Hanoi, Vietnam, there was almost no information. This made me feel that this is a cultural treasure yet to be widely revealed, a story waiting to be discovered by travelers like me and you.
