Pho Muang Long, Luang Namtha: The authentic taste of Northern Laos in a morning market atmosphere

When talking about Muang Long in Luang Namtha Province, a place many may not be familiar with, it has a deep charm that mr.hotsia must share. Besides the lush highland scenery and diverse tribal cultures, the local food such asPho Muang Longis one of the things that makes this visit unforgettable.

Usually, when I visit Muang Long, I think ofKhao Soi Lueor what is called Khao Soi Nam Na, a dish of the Lue people here for sure, because many Lue people live in Luang Namtha Province. But this time, I chose to avoid Khao Soi Nam Na because personally, I don’t quite like the taste. So I ordered pho instead, which is a dish popular in Northern Laos and Vietnam, but Muang Long’s pho has its own unique character that is quite interesting.

The restaurant I chose to eat pho at is in front of Muang Long morning market. The atmosphere in the late morning when the sunlight softens to a golden hue shining through the windows makes the place feel warm and relaxing. This atmosphere made me sit and enjoy so much that I lost track of time. The morning market itself is lively, with local villagers buying fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and various spices needed for daily cooking. I saw students cutting through the market to go to the school behind it, a scene full of simplicity and a lifestyle well preserved.

The pho I ordered had the delicious taste expected from Northern Laos pho: a broth with just the right amount of spices, not too strong, and the fragrant herbs used in the cooking. Eating it with soft, chewy pho noodles and fresh selected meat enhanced the smoothness in every bite. I usually add chili and lime to give a slight sour and spicy flavor because the aroma and taste of this pho remind me of the authentic rural Lao home dining atmosphere.

Muang Long is a small town in Luang Namtha Province, about 60 kilometers from Muang Sing, accessible by car fromMuang Sing Bus Stationwhich is not far from Muang Sing morning market. Travel is convenient but requires good timing planning because if the vehicle is not full, it might not depart as scheduled. I have experienced this situation myself and it took three hours before leaving Muang Sing to Muang Long.

Upon arriving in Muang Long, you see a small town with a central market to stroll and closely observe the local lifestyle. There is also an ATM from the Lao Development Bank available, convenient for tourists needing cash withdrawals. For accommodation, there are many affordable guesthouses and hotels. Personally, mr.hotsia prefers staying atThatsany Guesthousewhich is near the market for convenience and a safe atmosphere. The rooms are clean and budget-friendly. Importantly, most accommodations in Muang Long do not yet offer Wi-Fi.

Besides pho, Muang Long also has interesting local dishes such asFried Eggplantwhich is a simple but flavorful dish often sold in morning markets or local restaurants. I enjoy eating these foods in the bustling market atmosphere, experiencing the real lifestyle vibe of Northern Laos people.

For those interested in continuing travel from Muang Long, you can take a vehicle toLuang Namtha Bus Stationabout 7 kilometers away, which is the main bus station of Luang Namtha Province. It is an important point for onward travel to Boten and the Chinese border, as well as other towns in Luang Namtha and nearby areas. If you want to experience a lively morning market atmosphere of the Lue and Tai Dam people, don’t forget to visitMuang Sing Morning Marketwhich is not far from Muang Long.

Overall, visiting Muang Long in Luang Namtha Province allowed me to experience the simple lifestyle of Northern Laos people truly. The pho I ate on a soft sunny day with golden light streaming into the restaurant became a memory I will never forget. mr.hotsia recommends that if you have a chance to pass this way, don’t miss tasting Muang Long pho in the morning market atmosphere and take a walk through the market that still firmly preserves its traditions.
