Attapeu Morning Market: Experience riverside life along the Sekong River with mr.hotsia
If you have the chance to visit Attapeu town, Attapeu Province, Laos, I, mr.hotsia, recommend you to wake up early and experience the morning market atmosphere here. It’s a great opportunity to see the vibrant local life and authentic culture of the Attapeu people. This morning market is located along the Sekong River, near the bridge connecting to Vietnam. If you enjoy adventurous travel, this market is an excellent starting point.
I traveled from Kontum, Vietnam, and after crossing the border into Attapeu, I headed straight to this morning market. I can say it was definitely worth it! The morning and evening markets in Attapeu share the same location, but the morning market is livelier and offers a much wider variety of goods. I recommend visiting in the morning when the air is fresh, not too hot, and the fresh produce has just been caught from the Sekong River the previous night.
The Specialty of Sekong River Fish
One of the highlights of the Attapeu morning market is the incredibly abundant Sekong River fish. I, mr.hotsia, explored local products and found rare fish species that are no longer common in Thailand, such as the giant snakehead fish and other large freshwater fish. The prices are not cheap but worth the quality and freshness. I bought half a kilogram of 'pla na noo' fish for 100 baht and took it to my favorite local restaurant. The sweet aroma and firm texture of the 'pla na noo' left a lasting impression on me since I first tried it in Champasak, and this time it did not disappoint.
The market atmosphere is filled with the chatter of locals and smiling vendors. The goods sold are not only fish but also fresh vegetables, local fruits, and dried products that villagers enthusiastically bring to sell. I wandered around, witnessing the simple yet truly charming lifestyle of the locals. This place reminded me of the peacefulness of a small town that still preserves its traditional culture and way of life very well.
Travel and Accommodation in Attapeu
For those interested in traveling to Attapeu, getting there is not difficult. There are regular buses from Pakse, passing through Pak Song and Sekong, arriving at Attapeu. Alternatively, there are quality sleeper buses from Savannakhet to Attapeu, which I have previously recommended inAttapeu Bus StationIf you get off at the bus station, which is about 7 kilometers from the town center, you can take a jumbo taxi or a tuk-tuk to the town at an affordable price.
In Attapeu town itself, there are various accommodation options ranging from budget fan rooms at 200-300 baht per night to air-conditioned rooms priced between 400-500 baht. These prices are relatively high compared to other towns in Laos. However, if you want convenience and a quiet atmosphere, I recommend staying in town and spending time strolling along the Sekong River in the evening.
Connecting to Travel in Attapeu Province
Attapeu Morning Market is one of the experiences I, mr.hotsia, was very impressed with when visiting Attapeu Province, the southernmost province of Laos bordering Vietnam and Cambodia. This area has rich cultural diversity, especially with Vietnamese people making up over 50% of the population. Because of this, traveling through Attapeu towards Kontum or Gia Lai in Vietnam is a very interesting route.
