Inhang Stupa, Bueng Wa: A Symbol of Faith and Lakeside Life in Savannakhet
When talking about Savannakhet Province in Laos, one place I, mr.hotsia, feel I must recommend is “Inhang Stupa,” located not far from the city center, just about 8 kilometers north of Savannakhet, a lively river port city where the friendliness of the Lao people is clearly felt.
Inhang Stupa is not just an ordinary ancient site; for the Lao people, it is a sacred place deeply respected. I remember climbing the hill where the stupa stands and seeing the old yet powerful structure. The special feature is the stupa’s pinnacle, made of nearly half a kilogram of pure gold, which is rarely seen in typical temples or stupas.
The locals here have a life deeply connected to the stupa. I saw women wearing traditional sinh skirts coming to pay respects, accompanied by beautiful and simple Lao chants. Hearing the chanting in such an atmosphere reminded me of a rare peace hard to find in big cities.
Bueng Wa: A Relaxation Spot for Savannakhet People
A few kilometers before reaching Inhang Stupa, there is a large lake called “Bueng Wa,” a favorite relaxation spot of mine, mr.hotsia. On weekends, families come here to unwind. The atmosphere around the lake is simple and warm.
Around the lake, small food huts are scattered—not many, but enough to taste fresh local dishes. I recommend trying the local Lao food here; it’s delicious and truly atmospheric.
What impressed me even more was the local life around here. They raise buffaloes for farming, and children ride buffaloes home from the lake—a rare sight that truly reflects traditional ways of life. On the right side of the lake, where the road leads up, there are vast green rice fields so beautiful that I stopped to take photos many times.

Travel Tips from mr.hotsia
If you plan to pay respects at Inhang Stupa and visit Bueng Wa, I recommend not returning too late because the road between Bueng Wa and Savannakhet city is quite isolated and poorly lit. Planning to return before dusk will greatly enhance your safety.
