Thatang Morning Market, Sekong Province, Laos: A chilly morning with roadside life

When talking about morning markets in Sekong Province, I, mr.hotsia, have to say that “Thatang Morning Market” is quite an interesting stop. Although it doesn’t offer flashy food or souvenirs like other popular markets, the cool and comfortable morning atmosphere in Thatang town is what impressed me the most.

Thatang is a small town located between Pakxong, Sekong, and Salavan in Sekong Province, Laos. This town is special because it has a Vietnamese community that has settled here, opening several restaurants and shops. Although the area is not very large, the atmosphere is warm and simple, perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle and experience a peaceful, homely vibe.

I arrived in Thatang one morning using a motorcycle as my main transport. I recommend preparing well because there are no motorcycle rentals here, and accommodation options are limited. The price for lodging is about 300 baht per night, which is a good value considering the cool and pleasant weather. The temperature here is not as hot as other towns in Sekong Province because Thatang is only about 30 kilometers from Pakxong.

Thatang Morning Market doesn’t have any unusual or famous items that tourists rush to buy. What I like is strolling in the cool air, smelling the local essence. There are shops lined up selling fresh goods, vegetables, fruits, and local food. Locals shop at a relaxed pace, unlike the busy and hurried morning markets in big cities.

After walking around the market, I stopped to eat pho at a place that seemed to be an authentic Vietnamese restaurant. The flavor was rich and smooth. When chatting with the owner, I learned more about the Vietnamese community here, which added color to my trip.

Nearby trips from Thatang: Ethnic villages and the route to Dakjung

From Thatang, I rode my motorcycle about 4 kilometers further along the road to Salavan. On the left side, there is an ethnic village arranged for tourists to visit. Although I found nothing particularly outstanding there, it was a good opportunity to see the hill tribe lifestyle in Sekong Province up close. However, I felt that the natural tourist spots that remain untouched by tourists, likeDakjung townare more charming because you can experience the authentic Tay ethnic way of life more deeply there.

Precautions and traveling in Thatang

There is a police presence in Thatang, and I recommend wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle. It not only protects you from accidents but also helps avoid being stopped by the police. Generally, the police here don’t bother tourists much, but don’t be careless.

For those planning to travel to Sekong Province, don’t forget to prepare your travel routes well because traveling in this region is not as convenient as in big cities. For example, traveling from Sekong to Dakjung still takes several hours on roads under construction. However, it will be much easier in the future, which I have described in the articleTraveling from Sekong to DakjungFeel free to read it.

Overview of Thatang and my personal impressions

Thatang is a small town with a unique charm, especially in the cool and comfortable mornings, unlike the hot and stuffy weather in other towns. This makes strolling through the morning market an unexpectedly impressive experience. Although the market doesn’t have unusual or exclusive souvenirs, experiencing the atmosphere, lifestyle, and chatting with local people made me feel that this visit was very worthwhile.

After walking around the market and enjoying delicious pho, I had the chance to ride to visit nearby hill tribe houses and explore the outskirts of the town. This place is suitable for adventurous travelers who like simplicity and want to experience the true life in Sekong Province.

Finally, if you want to open a travel experience in northern Laos with fewer tourists, Thatang in Sekong Province is a very interesting choice.
