Actually, it is the small bamboo rat. There are four species of bamboo rats in the world: large, medium, Chinese, and small. The one I encountered at Luang Namtha market and other districts in Laos is the small bamboo rat. In Thailand, this animal is a protected wild species category 1. I am not sure about its status in Laos since I have never seen a real bamboo rat before. I found it at Luang Namtha market, so I have both videos and photos to share.
