To go to Thailand, China, or Vietnam by land, travelers must stop in Chai City, Udomxay District. Several years ago, when I backpacked alone to Dien Bien Phu, I used the Chiang Khong route.

Udomxay, Muang Khua, Dien Bien Phu - I think this city has developed very quickly over the past few years. Udomxay has many Chinese-owned shops opening for business. Mobile phone shops are run by Chinese sellers. Sometimes when we speak Thai, communication is difficult. Chinese people who come to live in Laos mostly enter via Luang Namtha. There are many Chinese chili and banana plantations in Laos. Chinese cars are common on the roads. Udomxay is a city where many Chinese choose to live. There are also Chinese hotels.

Traveling to Udomxay is possible by bus from neighboring towns. For those coming from Thailand, from Chiang Khong at Huay Sai in Bokeo Province, there are four daily trips. These buses either go directly to Udomxay or pass through Luang Prabang and Vientiane. The journey from Huay Sai to Udomxay takes about 5-6 hours. From Luang Prabang to Udomxay, besides regular buses, there are tourist buses with tickets sold at guesthouses. These are slightly more expensive than regular buses but more convenient as they pick you up directly from your accommodation.

Because the bus picks you up at your lodging, it is very convenient. Accommodation in downtown Udomxay is divided into two zones. The first zone is near the Udomxay bus station, with guesthouses priced around 300 baht, offering 4-5 options. The second zone is along the main road, with larger hotels costing about 500 baht per night. There are both Chinese-style and Lao-style hotels. Most travelers in Udomxay are Chinese, and hotel owners often speak Chinese. Some Chinese hotels even have karaoke bars inside, located in the city center. Udomxay restaurants in 2014

I recommend the Mimi restaurant on the main road on the left side, opposite Indochina Bank. This restaurant serves made-to-order dishes, pho, stewed pork leg rice, and red pork rice. It is crowded every day, delicious and clean. There are many other restaurants in Chai City on the opposite side in the same area. There is a curry rice restaurant for lunch that I saw many office workers frequent. Breakfast is at the morning market, lunch is curry rice, and dinner at Mimi restaurant or chill-out spots for tourists across the street.

Tourist activities in Chai City, Udomxay District include visiting the Udomxay morning market where forest products are cheaper than in Luang Namtha. Rare items can be found here. You can also hike up to the city view from the pagoda in the city center, and stroll around town. Most travelers spend only one night here before continuing to other cities. As for massage services (Laos massage), I am not familiar with any in this city, but if available, they are likely near the large hotels around the bridge crossing the Pak River. mr.hotsia
