mr.hotsia recommends hotels. Haw Phra Kaew was formerly the place housing the Emerald Buddha or Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Patimakorn before it was moved to Wat Phra Kaew. Although the Emerald Buddha is no longer here, it remains a place where Lao people pay respect and a tourist attraction for foreigners including Thais. Photography inside Haw Phra Kaew is strictly prohibited. Photos can be taken outside. You will see statues around that have had their eyes gouged out and heads removed since the war era because the eyes and heads were made of precious gems. But did you know?
There is one statue that survived: the last one on the left side (facing the temple). It is said that anyone who touches it will be cured of illness; rubbing the leg cures leg pain, rubbing the head cures headaches. This statue is worn down from everyone touching it. Around Haw Phra Kaew, there is also a stone jar brought from the Plain of Jars area. If you cannot visit Xiangkhoang, you can see it here in Vientiane at Haw Phra Kaew, but it does not have the atmosphere of the Plain of Jars, just one jar. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in the Vientiane capital.
