Famous and delicious in Vientiane, mr.hotsia recommends hotels. If you have visited Vientiane without rushing, you might have had time for a morning walk around the Mekong riverside (the sandbank between Thailand and Laos). Walk straight into the inner street, see the map below. Next to Saengdao Minimart in the city center, the hub for exploring Vientiane, there is a nameless shop selling Khao Piak. It’s delicious in the authentic Lao style.
The seller might be Vietnamese judging by his manner, probably not Lao. This shop sells Khao Piak, similar to rice porridge in our country, but here they add pork offal, minced pork, and green onions with coriander. The rice porridge is kept separate in another pot. When ordered, they scoop rice to cook with pork offal, minced pork, and pork pieces. It’s like congee but the rice isn’t mushy. Eat it with raw bean sprouts and seasonings like our noodle dishes. This Khao Piak costs 40 baht per bowl.
Besides Khao Piak, this shop also sells noodles and Lao coffee. In Vientiane early mornings, it’s quite hard to find food. Most people eat breakfast at their hotels. If you don’t like Western-style breakfasts, you can tell them to skip breakfast and save a few hundred baht on the room rate. Then take a relaxed walk and enjoy Khao Piak like I do... Mr.Hotsia June. Mr.Hotsia recommends hotels in the capital city Vientiane. The uncle who owns the Khao Piak shop.
