Chana Saytawya, Mudon Town, Kayah State: A profound experience with the Reclining Buddha Temple and Mon people's way of life
When talking about traveling in Kayah State, Myanmar, many might think of the tranquility of nature and culture rarely seen elsewhere. For me, mr.hotsia, experiencing Chana Saytawya, also known locally as Mudon Town, allowed me to see the real life of the Mon people up close and discover unique aspects rarely mentioned in general travel books.
Mudon Town is located about 24 kilometers from Mawlamyine. It is a tightly-knit Mon community. Here stands the world's longest unfinished Reclining Buddha temple, which isWin Sein Taw Ya TempleThis is the main destination for tourists wanting to experience the grandeur of this Reclining Buddha statue. The length of the statue is astonishing. When you get close, you can feel the peace and faith the locals have towards their religion.
For traveling to Chana Saytawya, I chose to rent a motorcycle with a driver for only 300 baht, about 10,000 kyats, which was very reasonable because the driver took me to important places around town, including the Reclining Buddha temple, nearby lakes, and I also had the chance to see Mon weaving traditions that preserve ancient wisdom.
Honestly, riding a motorcycle over 50 kilometers on rough roads made me quite sore, but what I saw was not just ordinary tourist spots as many might expect. I witnessed the real lifestyle of the Mon people—their daily life, simplicity, and preservation of traditional culture. For me, this was the most impressive part.
The lake in Mudon Town was another spot I explored. The atmosphere there was peaceful, perfect for relaxation and escaping the bustle of big cities. Locals live a self-sufficient life, fishing local fish and practicing simple agriculture. If you enjoy traveling focused on experiencing real local life, I recommend stopping by at least once.
However, for travelers seeking more diverse experiences, I, mr.hotsia, suggest saving your money to visitMon Islandfor better value. With a similar budget, you can enjoy beautiful seaside scenery and more varied activities. Traveling to Mon Island is easier and more convenient, with fresh seafood restaurants to try as well.
But if you prefer tranquility and want to see the real local lifestyle without rushing, Chana Saytawya is a good choice. Here, it's not just about the large Reclining Buddha statue but also the stories and culture hidden in the corners of the town waiting for you to discover. I feel that seeing this reality is more valuable than just taking photos or checking in at famous tourist spots.
If you are interested in diverse stories of the Burmese people, whether about temples or community life, I recommend watching videos aboutIndawgyi Lake, Kachin Stateor videos that tell various perspectives of life in Myanmar. They help provide a broader understanding and appreciation of the differences in each area.
Finally, traveling in Kayah State and Mudon Town taught me, mr.hotsia, that good travel is not just about seeing beautiful sights but about experiencing the true life and culture of the people there. If you enjoy deep and unhurried travel, Chana Saytawya is a destination I want you to visit at least once in your life.
