The Origin of the Irrawaddy River in Kachin State, Myanmar

Hello, I ammr.hotsiaToday, I will take you on a unique travel experience in Kachin State, Myanmar, a land that hides many secrets and natural beauties. My destination this time isMyitsonealso well-known as the origin of the Irrawaddy River, the main river that nourishes the life and culture of the Burmese people.

Journey to Myitsone, the confluence of the Mali Hka and Mekong Rivers

Myitsone is located about 40 kilometers from the center of Myitkyina city. For this trip, I chose to rent a motorcycle from the hotel. The price was reasonable, about 350 baht per day. I highly recommend renting a motorcycle if you travel in Myitkyina because it allows you to stop and enjoy the scenery freely along the way. And don't forget to always wear a helmet, as it is a strictly enforced rule.

The route from Myitkyina to Myitsone passes through small villages along the way. The atmosphere feels like stepping back in time, with the simple lifestyle of the locals. There are roadside shops selling local products and traditional food for us to try along the way. I stopped at one village to recharge with spicy local dishes. The aroma of the spices made me even more excited about this journey.

Irrawaddy River: The River of Life and Legend

The Irrawaddy River, or Ayeyarwady River, is over 2,170 kilometers long and is the lifeblood of Myanmar. Its source does not come from a single point but from the confluence of two rivers: the Mali Hka and the Mekong, which meet at Myitsone. This spot, known as the “Origin of the Irrawaddy River,” is sacred and very important to the Kachin people and local Burmese.

The name “Irrawaddy” comes from the name of the goddess Irrawaddy, mother of Airavata, according to local legend, reflecting the deep connection between the locals and this river.

Atmosphere and Activities at Myitsone

Upon arriving at Myitsone, the first thing that impressed me was the peacefulness and the crystal-clear water flowing together. There is a small temple by the riverbank where locals and tourists come to pay respects and relax. I took a walk to experience the small community around, which still maintains a truly traditional way of life.

Besides enjoying the natural scenery, Myitsone also offers local restaurants. I tried local dishes made from fresh local ingredients such as river fish and native vegetables, which were spicy and flavorful. You can also safely swim in the shallow parts of the river, a refreshing experience like no other.

For those seeking a special experience, there is a boat rental service to cruise along the upper Irrawaddy River, allowing you to see the beautiful and relatively untouched natural scenery on both sides of the river. It’s a great opportunity to closely observe the raw environment of this river.

Connecting to Other Attractions in Kachin State

If you have more time, visiting Indawgyi Lake, also in Kachin State, is another interesting option. This freshwater lake is one of the largest in the region, with high biodiversity and home to many rare birds and wildlife.Indawgyi LakeI recommend visiting to enjoy the natural beauty and learn about the lifestyle of the local communities.

Reflections After the Journey

Experiencing the origin of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone made me feel the power of nature and the beauty of local culture that is well preserved. This trip was not just tourism but a true learning and immersion into a different way of life.
