Backpacking India 10/129: From Hpa An to Yangon, Enjoying Hearty Bus Stop Meals on the Bus Route
Traveling by bus from Hpa An to Yangon is an experience I, mr.hotsia, think is worth documenting. It’s not just about moving from one place to another but is filled with stories, lifestyles, and the authentic atmosphere of Myanmar that few backpackers get to fully experience.
Hpa An, a small, peaceful, and beautiful town located in Kayin State, was my starting point for this journey before heading to Yangon, the former capital and largest city of Myanmar. Waiting for the bus at the station in Hpa An felt different from big tourist cities you might be used to. The buses here are basic and old, but the drivers and staff are attentive, and importantly, the price is very cheap compared to the quality and distance traveled.
Atmosphere on the Bus and Unique Rest Stops
As the bus departed from Hpa An, the views on both sides opened up to fields and rolling hills. I, mr.hotsia, watched out the window seeing locals farming, using ox carts and tractors that are not very modern — a rare sight in today’s world. The rest stops were my favorite part because they weren’t just gas stations or convenience stores like back home but small markets full of local food and snacks. The chatter in Burmese mixed with vendors’ calls created a lively atmosphere all the time.
I chose to try local dishes at the rest stops, whether sticky rice with fish curry or snacks like fish cakes. The flavors were rich with authentic Burmese spices, reminding me of food I had in Yangon and Bago, a city with a perfect blend of Thai and Burmese history.Bago CityI had visited before and found plenty of food and temples to explore, making the route from Hpa An to Yangon even more interesting.
Yangon, a Large City Full of Life and Culture
After several hours on the bus, I finally arrived in Yangon, the former capital that still captivates travelers like me, mr.hotsia. Yangon is not just famous for the striking Sule Pagoda or the world-renowned Shwedagon Pagoda but is also full of the daily life of Burmese people. Traveling from the airport to the city center is convenient, and I have shared my experience in an article.Traveling from Yangon Airport to the CityI recommend using fixed-price taxis to avoid worrying about bargaining.
In Yangon, I love strolling through market areas and street food stalls because they are a true collection of local flavors like chicken biryani, fresh soy milk, or Burmese desserts you won’t find elsewhere.Street Food in Yangonis another charm I, mr.hotsia, don’t want you to miss.
Riding the Yangon Circle Line Train to Experience Local Life Up Close
If you have time in Yangon, I recommend trying the Yangon Circle Line Train, an experience I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy. This train takes you through communities that still preserve the traditional lifestyle and culture of the Burmese people remarkably well. The journey takes about 3 hours, but you won’t get bored because along the way you see houses by the tracks, fresh markets, and lush green fields.Riding the Yangon Circle Line Trainis the best way to understand the lifestyle and rhythm of Yangon’s people.
Summary of Backpacking and Traveling in Myanmar
For me, mr.hotsia, traveling by bus from Hpa An to Yangon is not just changing locations but learning about people’s lifestyles, stopping to eat at rest stops full of unique foods, and seeing the real Myanmar countryside. Most importantly, it’s about experiencing the warm and friendly atmosphere of the Burmese people, which is truly impressive.
If you’re planning to visit Myanmar, don’t forget to stop byBago Cityto see the Thai-Burmese way of life and allocate enough time to fully explore Yangon. Traveling independently will show you a different world, and I, mr.hotsia, guarantee you will love Myanmar as much as I do.
