Backpacking India 15/129: Enjoying Roast Duck in Yangon at Golden Duck Restaurant
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to revisit Yangon after many years of serious travel in Myanmar. Yangon is not only the former capital of Myanmar but also a city full of local life and cuisine that makes me want to return again. This time, I focused on the "roast duck," a signature dish everyone must try.
Golden Duck Restaurant is a roast duck place I discovered by chance while strolling in downtown Yangon. The restaurant is modest, a local eatery frequented by many Burmese people. I remember passing by in the evening when the aroma of charcoal-grilled roast duck filled the air, making me stop and immediately sit down.
The roast duck here is special because the skin is very crispy, the meat juicy and fragrant with Burmese spices unlike the Chinese or Hong Kong-style roast duck I have eaten in Thailand. The duck sauce is a secret recipe, rich and not overly sweet, reminiscent of typical Burmese sauces but specially adjusted for roast duck.
I ordered roast duck with hot steamed rice and a clear soup with a mild flavor. It was a meal more satisfying than expected because the duck portions were large and plentiful, almost enough for a full dinner.
Besides roast duck, I also tried the grilled chicken and pork at this restaurant. The flavors were equally excellent, but for me, the roast duck here is truly the star.
