Yangon Roast Duck: A Delicious Must-Try When Visiting Myanmar
When talking about Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, many might think of the Shwedagon Pagoda or the temple atmosphere. But for mr.hotsia, one experience you must not miss is “roast duck,” a local dish that perfectly blends flavors and culture. It’s a dish I personally tried from street vendors in Yangon and couldn’t forget.
Roast duck in Yangon differs from the roast duck we are familiar with in Bangkok. Here, the duck is smaller with firm meat, infused with the aroma of Burmese spices and local herbs marinated deeply. The duck is charcoal-grilled until the skin is crispy but the meat remains juicy and tender. The sauce served or dipped with it is usually a sweet and sour tamarind and chili sauce. Some places also offer fresh bird’s eye chili sauce to add extra spiciness.
The last time mr.hotsia traveled to Yangon, in the evening I strolled near the night market close to Sule Pagoda. I saw many roast duck stalls lined up, the aroma drifting in the air made me stop and watch. The roast duck here is sold by pieces or as a plate with hot steamed rice. I ordered one plate of roast duck with sticky rice and a fresh sweet and sour vegetable salad. That was enough for a full and delicious meal.
Yangon itself is a city where old and modern lifestyles blend. Eating roast duck by the street is the best way to experience the real life of Burmese people here, including the warmth and friendliness of the food vendors. Even though we didn’t share the same language, smiles and kindness made this trip full of wonderful memories.
Travel and Connect with Yangon’s Way of Life
For tourists planning to visit Yangon, traveling from Yangon Airport to the city center is very convenient. I took a taxi from the airport to downtown at a reasonable price, about 8 US dollars (approximately 8,000 kyats), which is fair and safe.Read more about traveling from Yangon Airport to the city
Once in the city, mr.hotsia recommends trying the Yangon Circle Line Train. It’s a great way to see local life while enjoying the scenery along the railway, which includes fresh markets, rice fields, and traditional Burmese houses. The train ride takes about 3 hours and costs only 1 US dollar.Read more about riding the Yangon Circle Line Train
The Relationship Between Food and Culture in Myanmar
Burmese cuisine is diverse and reflects the history and culture blended from various ethnic groups. In Yangon, you will find a harmonious mix of Mon, Burmese, and Chinese food. Roast duck is not just a delicious dish but also a symbol of cooperation and cultural diversity.
If you want to learn more about Burmese lifestyle and culture, mr.hotsia recommends visiting Bago, about 80 kilometers north of Yangon. There, you can see important religious and historical sites and experience the simple life of the Mon people.Read more about self-guided tours in Bagowhich perfectly enriched my Myanmar trip
