Eating crispy pork rice Burmese style in Yangon with mr.hotsia

When it comes to Burmese food that mr.hotsia personally loves, one of the must-try dishes when visiting Yangon is authentic Burmese “crispy pork rice,” which is very different from what we have at home. Many Thai visitors to Myanmar might not realize that Burmese cuisine has a unique and interesting flavor profile, especially the crispy pork here, which differs from Thai crispy pork in both frying method and seasonings used.

I, mr.hotsia, started my crispy pork rice trip at a fresh market in downtown Yangon, which I recommend to friends to experience the real local lifestyle before enjoying the aroma of freshly fried crispy pork at street stalls along the walkways. Yangon markets are unlike those back home because they are infused with authentic Burmese spices and herbs all the time. The lively chatter of Burmese vendors speaking in Burmese mixed with the crisp frying sounds of crispy pork hitting the pan creates a vibrant and warm atmosphere.

Most Burmese crispy pork here consists of pieces fried to be crispy on the outside and tender inside. The pork skin is very crispy but not hard like Thai crispy pork. The taste is slightly salty with fragrant spices such as pepper powder and salt used for marinating before frying. I, mr.hotsia, like to eat it with hot steamed rice and the chili dipping sauce made by the vendor. Some places also serve a clear Burmese-style soup that enhances the flavor and makes the meal more enjoyable.

Strolling around Yangon while tasting street food

After fully enjoying the crispy pork rice, I, mr.hotsia, continued exploring Yangon. The city’s charm lies in its blend of ancient Burmese culture with slowly growing modernity. Yangon is full of fresh markets, flea markets, and street food stalls. For street food lovers, I recommend exploring around Sule Pagoda, where you can find famous crispy pork rice shops and simple crispy pork rice stalls to choose from.

Traveling from Yangon airport to the city is convenient. I have written about it in an articleTraveling from Yangon Airport to the Citywhere I mentioned that taxi fares from the airport to downtown are about 8 USD, which is quite affordable for Myanmar travel based on my experience. I usually stay near Sule Pagoda because it’s convenient and close to my favorite crispy pork rice places.

Burmese Crispy Pork Rice VS Thai Crispy Pork

Many may wonder how Burmese crispy pork differs from Thai crispy pork. I, mr.hotsia, have compared them honestly from experience. Thai crispy pork usually has crunchy skin with just the right amount of pork fat attached, while Burmese crispy pork focuses mainly on very crispy skin with tender, less fatty meat. The portion size is just right and not greasy.

Another thing I like is that Burmese seasonings are not as sweet as ours. The flavor is salty with a slight spiciness from dried chili and spices used in the marinade before frying. Eating it with hot steamed rice feels perfectly matched and unlike any crispy pork I’ve had before.

mr.hotsia’s Experience with Burmese Crispy Pork Rice in Yangon

Once, I, mr.hotsia, tried crispy pork rice at a popular local spot recommended by locals in downtown Yangon. The shop looked simple with nothing special, but the aroma of fried pork was very tempting. I ordered one plate of crispy pork rice with a small bowl of soup. From the first bite, I almost forgot my travel fatigue. The pork was perfectly crispy, the skin crunchy with a satisfying crackle, slightly salty with fragrant spices combined with hot steamed rice — a small happiness I, mr.hotsia, will never forget.

After finishing my crispy pork rice trip in Yangon, I had the chance to continue traveling to Bago, which is not far from Yangon. If anyone is interested in following my footsteps, read the articleExploring Bago on Your Ownto see the lifestyle and attractions of this historic city, which also offers interesting Burmese food.

Additional Tips for Those Wanting to Try Burmese Crispy Pork Rice in Yangon

For travelers wanting to try Burmese crispy pork rice in Yangon, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing as follows:

  • Choose to eat in the morning or at noon because many crispy pork rice shops open early and the food is fresh.
  • Don’t forget to bring cash because most street food vendors don’t accept credit cards.
  • Try exploring several shops before ordering to compare and pick your favorite.
  • If you like it spicy, tell the vendor because Burmese chili dipping sauces come in various spice levels.
