mr.hotsia@Yakhai 19/20: Enjoying Grilled Seafood in Yangon, Myanmar Yangon Seafood
When talking about Yangon, many people often think of a big city full of temples and a lifestyle that still preserves the simplicity of the Burmese people mixed with modernity in some aspects. But for mr.hotsia, Yangon is not only about tourist attractions or culture; it is also a paradise for food lovers, especially fresh grilled seafood that is truly excellent. I have to share this from my own experience.
The last time I arrived at Yangon Airport (Travel from Yangon Airport to the city) I didn’t waste any time and quickly took a taxi straight to the popular seafood area favored by both tourists and locals. With affordable prices and bold flavors, I can say the grilled prawns, giant crabs, and fresh oysters here did not disappoint.
Yangon is a city located near the coast and Yangon River, making the seafood ingredients here very fresh. I walked into the central city seafood market area that gathers many grilled seafood vendors. Seeing the crowded shops made my mouth water immediately. Wherever the locals crowded, I joined in because I believe deliciousness comes with local popularity.
The highlight of this meal was the large grilled river prawns, firm and sweet meat, served with a spicy Burmese dipping sauce that perfectly blends sour, spicy, and sweet flavors. There were also grilled fresh, rich crab meat and giant oysters freshly caught from the sea, grilled just enough to be fragrant, eaten with hot sticky rice. I can say it was truly delightful.
What makes eating seafood in Yangon interesting is the atmosphere of the shops, which feel more like a fresh market than fancy expensive restaurants. You will see locals walking around, vendors shouting to attract customers, along with the mixed scents of fire smoke and the sea. I think this charm makes the food here taste even better many times over.
Besides the food, traveling around Yangon is also a memorable experience. I recommend trying the city circle train (Yangon City Circle Train Ride) which takes you through both urban and rural communities around the city. Along the way, you will see the real lifestyle of the Burmese people, including markets by the railway, rice fields, and traditional houses, which enhanced my seafood dining experience that day.
If anyone is interested in continuing to the nearby historic city of Bago, which has many important religious and cultural sites, I recommend planning your own trip easily by reading more in the articleSelf-Guided Tour of Bagothat I have written.
For those who want to experience Yangon beyond just tourist spots, I suggest taking a walk in local markets and street food areas (Street Food in Yangon) where you can taste new flavors and see the real daily life of the Burmese people. Here you can find big pieces of curry bread and various fried snacks, which are local dishes that I, as a Thai, really enjoy.
I like Yangon because it is not like other chaotic capitals; it still has calmness and a strong sense of identity. The name “Yangon” means “End of Strife,” symbolizing the end of conflict and the beginning of a new life. This city has its own charm, whether it’s the delicious seafood market or the journey full of stories of the people.

Finally, I want to say that traveling in Myanmar doesn’t always mean going far to Mandalay or Naypyidaw. Just walking around and tasting food in Yangon is an experience that fulfills a traveler’s heart like mine. And if you have the chance, don’t forget to try the seafood here. I guarantee you will love it.
