mr.hotsia@Yakhai 20/20: End of Yakhai Trip at Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, Myanmar

After a colorful and memorable journey from Yakhai, a coastal city hidden on the southwestern map of Myanmar, this trip by mr.hotsia reaches its final moments in Yangon, the heart of Myanmar, before heading home. The city is not only the economic center but also retains its spiritual capital status with the sacred Shwedagon Pagoda.

I started the last day of the trip by visiting Shwedagon Pagoda, a symbol of Yangon and Myanmar as a whole. This towering golden pagoda sits on a small hill in the city center and is a gathering point for tourists and locals to pay respects. The atmosphere here is filled with tranquility and deep faith. I walked around admiring the pagoda adorned with real gold and precious gems, watching people lighting incense and candles and praying sincerely.

Although I have visited various temples and pagodas in Bago before (Self-Guided Trip to Bago), coming to Shwedagon Pagoda this time felt different because Yangon is a vibrant city and this place is truly the spiritual center of the Burmese people.

I strolled around the pagoda area, seeing Burmese people of all ages dressed in traditional clothing, sitting and chatting while enjoying local snacks sold along the street. The cheerful sounds of children playing filled the air. I took a rest under a large tree near the pagoda, watching people pass by and feeling the blend of faith and daily life.

Getting into downtown Yangon was easy. From Yangon Airport, only 15 kilometers away, I chose a taxi service for a flat rate of just 8 US dollars, which was very reasonable for this trip (Travel from Yangon Airport to City). Meeting friendly and smiling airport staff made me feel warmer than I expected before the trip.

Yangon impressed me with its diverse lifestyles blending perfectly. Whether it was the bustling street markets full of people selling fresh produce and local food, the aroma of spices and Burmese dishes tempting me to try street food at roadside stalls (Street Food in Yangon), I enjoyed watching people, buying mochi bread and hot sweet tea from small vendors, and seeing elders in traditional dress sitting and playing with children in community neighborhoods. It was a heartwarming and lovely scene.

Besides visiting pagodas and markets, I didn’t miss riding the Yangon Circle Line train, the best way to experience local life. This train takes about 3 hours and passes through both old town and rural areas, giving me a glimpse of simple Burmese life deeply connected to nature (Riding the Yangon Circle Line Train)

). The evening atmosphere at Shwedagon Pagoda changed again as lights reflected off the golden pagoda’s peak. I felt the sacredness and peace here. Even though it was crowded with tourists and locals, the inner calm remained.

Throughout the Yakhai trip and visit to Yangon, mr.hotsia learned and absorbed the true Burmese culture—not just the beautiful images seen in photos but the real lives of people, their beliefs, and their adaptation to the modern world while firmly holding onto traditions.

For anyone interested in experiencing this atmosphere, I recommend planning your own trip, whether traveling from Yangon Airport to the city or stopping by Bago, which is nearby (Self-Guided Trip to Bago) to understand the diversity and depth of Myanmar from different perspectives.

Finally, mr.hotsia would like to share a short video clip capturing memories from this trip for everyone to watch.mr.hotsia@Yakhai 20/20: End of Yakhai Trip at Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, MyanmarHope to see you on the next trip where I will take you to experience new lifestyles and perspectives of this neighboring country again.
