Mahazedi Pagoda in Bago: The charm of rural life and authentic Burmese lifestyle

When it comes to traveling in Myanmar that deeply connects me with its way of life and history, one of the places that impressed me so much I want to share isMahazedi PagodaorMahazedi Payawhich is located in a small village in the rural area of Bago, about 80 kilometers north of Yangon. Many Thai people may be familiar with Bago by its former name “Hongsawadi,” a historic city full of stories about the great King Bayinnaung.

The first time I, mr.hotsia, traveled to this Mahazedi Pagoda, I did not come just to see the large pagoda. What impressed me more was the life of the people of Bago that I witnessed. Amid heavy rain that day, I met young Burmese men and women dressed in traditional attire. The women wore traditional skirts and blouses, as if I had traveled back hundreds of years. There were also more than ten children happily playing on natural rainwater slides, both boys and girls. This kind of atmosphere is rare to find in big cities.

This Mahazedi Pagoda is not located in a big city or a bustling tourist area but truly in the countryside. Walking around the pagoda, I saw traditional houses and a lifestyle that remains simple and peaceful. This place is not only a religious site but also a cultural and lifestyle learning center for the rural Burmese community.

A must-see when visiting Mahazedi Pagoda is King Bayinnaung’s war prayer spot, where a majestic elephant statue stands prominently. Visitors can pay respects and capture the grandeur of the pagoda from this viewpoint. The pagoda rising from the rice fields and rural villages evokes a sense of historical greatness and the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

To travel to Mahazedi Pagoda, I recommend starting from Yangon, the gateway to Myanmar and a major city with an international airport. For travel information from Yangon Airport to the city, you can read more atTravel from Yangon Airport to the Citywhich is convenient and hassle-free.

From Yangon, I chose to use a private car or public transport to Bago, about 80 kilometers away. The journey takes about 2 hours. Along this route, you will see the simple lifestyle of Burmese people, such as rice fields, cows, and old tractors passing by. You may also see people resting on the roadside, which might seem unusual to typical tourists but for mr.hotsia, this is the charm of deep travel in Myanmar.

Mahazedi Pagoda is also one of the important sacred sites in Bago. Besides being a spiritual center for local Burmese, it connects historically with the ancient Burmese royal family, closely linked to Thai history. I have written detailed articles about Bago and other attractions inSelf-Guided Tour of Bagowhich recommends planning to visit the Reclining Buddha Shwethalyaung, Shwemawdaw Pagoda, and Bayinnaung Palace as well.

If you enjoy an in-depth travel style like mr.hotsia, not just taking beautiful photos but experiencing real life, Mahazedi Pagoda in Bago will meet your expectations. Besides admiring the pagoda and paying respect to the elephant statue symbolizing strength, you will see children playing joyfully in the rain and people in traditional costumes preserving their customs tightly, a sight rarely found in big cities.

After walking around the pagoda and absorbing positive energy from rural life, I, mr.hotsia, also recommend trying local dishes from Bago and nearby towns with unique flavors, such as Burmese-style rice mixed with fermented fish sauce or grilled pork skewers sold by the roadside, which I have described in my articleBurmese Foodguaranteed to satisfy both your stomach and heart.

If you are planning a trip to Myanmar and want a different experience—not just wandering in big cities or famous temples—Mahazedi Pagoda in Bago is one of the places I, mr.hotsia, recommend adding to your travel list. Traveling into this countryside not only lets you see the grandeur of the pagoda but also learn about the lifestyle and feel the sincerity of the Burmese people here up close.

Finally, if you want more information about traveling in Myanmar cities like Yangon, Mandalay, or visiting sacred sites, you can follow my other articles at mr.hotsia such asTraveling Yangon MyanmarandSelf-Guided Tour of Mandalaywhere I have compiled real experiences shared in detail and entertainingly.
