Shwedagon Pagoda: The Great Heritage in the Heart of Yangon that mr.hotsia Must Share

When talking about the symbol of Yangon city, Myanmar, Shwedagon Pagoda must be one of the first places I, mr.hotsia, think of. With its beauty and deep faith embedded in the Burmese way of life, this golden pagoda stands proudly on Singuttara Hill in the heart of Yangon, visible from afar at a height of 98 meters. To me, it is not just architecture but a living place for Burmese people and tourists from around the world.

I have visited here twice: once early in the morning with soft sunlight, and the second time in the evening just before dark to capture the perfect contrast of the blue sky and golden pagoda. It is open all day but charges a $5 USD entrance fee, which I consider very worthwhile. The ticket and sticker you receive allow you to visit the pagoda all day. Don’t lose them because some may want to return to experience different atmospheres such as morning, late morning, afternoon, evening, or even nighttime when the pagoda is beautifully lit in gold.

The Way of Life and Faith of Burmese People at Shwedagon Pagoda

Shwedagon Pagoda is not just a tourist attraction but a sacred place deeply respected by Burmese people of all ages. I, mr.hotsia, noticed it is a gathering point for locals, young and old, who come to pay respects, meditate, or quietly converse. Many walk around the pagoda to worship and pour water on the Buddha statue corresponding to their birth day, a warm and charming tradition I found very touching.

The Burmese birth day Buddha statues are interesting because besides the usual Sunday to Saturday, Wednesday is divided into day and night. Each day has a symbolic animal: Garuda for Sunday, Tiger for Monday, Lion for Tuesday, Tusked and Tuskless Elephant for Wednesday, Rat for Thursday, Guinea Pig for Friday, and Naga for Saturday. These animals are placed in different directions around the pagoda for easy finding and water pouring worship. I, mr.hotsia, who speak Thai and have worked in Thailand, also received help from Burmese locals here to find my birth day Buddha statue.

Details and History that Impressed mr.hotsia

Shwedagon Pagoda was built about 2,500 years ago, making it one of the oldest pagodas in the world. Although there is no clear evidence, legends and faith make it the spiritual center of Burmese people. Inside the pagoda are enshrined 8 strands of the Buddha’s hair, the highest sacred relic.

I, mr.hotsia, also heard an impressive story about King Rama IX of Thailand and the Queen who visited Shwedagon Pagoda in 1960 and offered gold and silver trees, candles, and personal royal funds to restore 2,503 pagodas, matching the age of Buddhism that year. This touched me deeply about the relationship between Thailand and Myanmar through religion and culture.

Travel and Convenience for Tourists

Visiting Shwedagon Pagoda is easier than you think, especially if you arrive at Yangon International Airport, which is about 15 kilometers from downtown. I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a taxi from the airport to the city for about $8 USD, which is very convenient and safe. Read more details aboutTravel from Yangon Airport to Cityhere.

Upon arriving at the pagoda area, you will see four main entrances. For foreign tourists, there is a western gate with English-speaking staff to welcome and assist you. Facilities include foot washing and shower rooms, as well as escalators to the pagoda. Other entrances also have elevators available.

Don’t forget to remove your shoes before climbing the stairs as per Burmese custom to show respect, which I, mr.hotsia, strictly follow to fully absorb the atmosphere and faith here.

Atmosphere and Activities Around the Pagoda

The area around Shwedagon Pagoda is filled with many pavilions providing shade and rest for visitors. I, mr.hotsia, have seen young Burmese people counting prayer beads, meditating, or cleaning the pagoda regularly, showing deep attachment and faith.

Although there was Wi-Fi available at the pagoda when I visited, the signal was unstable. I chose to disconnect from the online world to fully experience the peace and atmosphere of the place. Additionally, there are ATMs for those who need to exchange money or prepare before continuing their journey.

Connect Your Experience with Bago and Yangon

If you want to continue traveling from Yangon, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting Bago, about 80 kilometers away. Bago has important religious and historical sites such as the Reclining Buddha Shwethalyaung and the Great Shwemawdaw Pagoda, which is 114 meters tall, even taller than Shwedagon Pagoda.Read detailed self-guided travel in Bagofrom my article.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

Shwedagon Pagoda is more than a tourist site for me, mr.hotsia. It is the heart of Yangon and Myanmar. It allowed me to experience faith, lifestyle, and unique beauty. Walking barefoot on the golden pagoda floor, being close to Burmese people in daily activities, and the golden light atmosphere in the evening made me feel relaxed and deeply learn the culture.

If you have a chance to visit Myanmar, don’t forget to spend at least half a day at Shwedagon Pagoda to truly absorb Burmese culture.
