Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha Temple Yangon: Experience the Reclining Buddha with Sweet Eyes in Myanmar

Hello, I am mr.hotsia sharing my journey visiting the Chauk Htat Gyi Reclining Buddha Temple, also known asChauk Htat Gyi Buddha Temple (CHAUK HTAT GYI)located in Yangon, Myanmar. This place impressed me deeply because it not only features the beautiful Reclining Buddha statue but also offers a chance to experience the lifestyle of Burmese people who deeply preserve their religious traditions and spirit.

This temple is famous for its large Reclining Buddha with vividly colorful and extraordinarily beautiful eyes, which inspired the name “Sweet Eyes” given by the Burmese because the statue’s eyes look lively and captivating. My favorite spot was the Buddha’s feet, which have detailed and beautiful sole patterns resembling artistic designs that tell religious stories or meanings. There is a spot to stand close for photos, allowing me to see the details clearly and feel the sacredness of the statue.

Besides the beauty of the statue, the temple’s atmosphere is equally charming. I noticed Burmese vendors here speaking Thai fluently, showing that many Thai tourists visit often, which made me feel warm and welcomed. I also saw several nuns and Burmese people meditating at the temple. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect for resting the mind and calming the spirit.

Upon arriving in Yangon, Chauk Htat Gyi Temple is not far from the city center. You can easily get there by trishaw or taxi. I used a trishaw service at a negotiable price. Along the way, I saw daily life of Burmese people walking around this area, with small roadside shops selling snacks and drinks, reflecting the simple yet charming lifestyle of the locals.

Experience the Lifestyle at the Temple and Surrounding Community

Around Chauk Htat Gyi Temple, I met Burmese vendors who spoke Thai fluently. I learned that many Thai tourists visit here, making the small market around the temple full of souvenirs and food suitable for Thai travelers, including fresh fruits and local snacks with flavors similar to home.

What impressed me most was seeing Burmese people seriously meditating and practicing Dharma at the temple. Some were nuns dressed neatly, others were villagers seeking peace in the morning or evening. Witnessing this gave me a sense of calm and deep faith in Buddhism. Although this temple is well known among tourists, it still maintains its role as a place for spiritual practice very well.
