Mandalay Airport, the starting point of your adventure in Myanmar
If you are planning to travel to Mandalay, an important cultural and historical city of Myanmar, the first thing mr.hotsia would like to recommend is to get to knowMandalay International Airportor Mandalay International Airport, located about 35 kilometers from the city center, approximately a 45-minute drive, which is not too far considering the distance and road conditions in Myanmar.
This airport is the main gateway for foreign tourists and Myanmar locals traveling to the northern region of the country, especially those wanting to explore Mandalay and unique attractions such asMahamuni Buddhaor U Bein’s Bridge, a must-see attraction in this city according to mr.hotsia.
Traveling from the airport to Mandalay city
Upon arriving at Mandalay Airport, the first thing to arrange is transportation into the city, which offers some simple and interesting options.TaxiAt the airport, there are both private and shared taxi services. A private taxi costs about 15,000 Kyat or roughly 15 USD (around 450 THB), suitable for those who dislike waiting or are traveling with heavy luggage. For budget travelers, shared taxis are available at only 5 USD (about 150 THB) per person.
For Thai travelers flying with Air Asia, convenience is increased by free shuttle bus services from the airport to the city and back. The Air Asia buses depart twice at 12:45 PM and 1:00 PM. To use this service, keep your boarding pass handy as it facilitates passenger verification and boarding. The shuttle bus stops at the intersection of 79th Street and 26-27 Road (also known as 75th Street, 26-27 Road). If you are staying at a hotel in the city, you can inform the driver of your accommodation name so they can drop you off conveniently along the route.
For the return trip from Mandalay city to the airport, Air Asia shuttle buses operate two morning departures at 9:00 AM and 9:15 AM, picking up passengers at the same location on 75th Street, 26-27 Road. This ensures you won’t worry about late airport transfers or difficulty finding transport early in the morning.
Money exchange tips and spending at Mandalay Airport
mr.hotsia strongly advises that exchanging money at Mandalay Airport is essential! Upon stepping off the plane, the first thing to do is exchange US dollars (USD) into Myanmar Kyat. I recommend bringing fresh 100 USD bills from Thailand for better rates and value. Currency exchange is very convenient at the airport, with banks and exchange counters located near the arrivals exit. There are two clearly visible places where you can exchange money immediately without hesitation.
Although some hotels in Mandalay accept US dollars, using Kyat for daily expenses is much more cost-effective because shops, markets, and most taxis primarily accept Kyat. Therefore, exchanging Kyat for city spending will make your trip more convenient and economical, unlike in Yangon where US dollars remain more popular as I previously mentioned inan earlier articlewhere US dollars are still widely used.
Atmosphere and feelings upon arrival at Mandalay Airport
Unlike Yangon Airport, which I described inthis articleMandalay Airport is smaller and feels much warmer. Here, you experience the simplicity of authentic Myanmar atmosphere. Airport staff and immigration officers are kind, smiling, and genuinely helpful—not as stern as some might expect.
While waiting for luggage, I often notice tourists and locals traveling with small bags, preparing to explore Mandalay city or nearby provinces. This experience reminds me of true traveler style, requiring careful preparation and planning.
Connecting travel to other important cities in Myanmar
Mandalay is a very convenient hub for traveling to nearby cities such as Bago, known to Thai travelers as Hongsawadi, about 80 kilometers away. If you are interested in the lifestyle and history of the Myanmar and Mon people, I recommend readingthe self-guided Bago travel articleI wrote, which will greatly enrich your travel experience.
Also, if you have a chance to visit Yangon, another gateway city to Myanmar, don’t forget to try street food as I recommended inthe Yangon street food articleto experience authentic Myanmar flavors and learn about the local lifestyle there.
