Thep Thanjai Botahtaung Pagoda in Yangon is a must-experience for mr.hotsia

When talking about sacred places in Yangon, Myanmar, one destination I, mr.hotsia, recommend without hesitation isBotahtaung Pagodaor commonly called “Thep Thanjai.” This pagoda is located in the heart of Yangon near the Yangon River, a major city hub, and is one of the pagodas with a history as old as the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Botahtaung Pagoda was first built by the Mon people nearly 2,500 years ago, around the same era as Shwedagon. What makes this pagoda stand out is the belief in “Thep Thanjai,” known to the Burmese asBo Bo Gyithe guardian spirit depicted as a kind elderly man pointing his finger, believed to grant wishes quickly and effectively—truly “instant” blessings.

I, mr.hotsia, recently experienced the atmosphere here and understood why many Thais come to worship Thep Thanjai. Visitors often offer fresh bananas, the deity’s favorite offering. Many come to pray for luck, career, love, and health, and many have had their wishes fulfilled.

Atmosphere inside Botahtaung Pagoda

After worshiping Thep Thanjai, I recommend walking around inside the pagoda, which resembles the tunnel temple in Chiang Mai. There is a walkway passing through the pagoda and an underground tunnel housing sacred relics. Walking through, you can appreciate the art and beauty of the pagoda restored after its destruction during World War II.

Walking in this area evokes deep memories and history of Yangon. Although Botahtaung Pagoda was destroyed and rebuilt, it still retains its sacredness and significance firmly in the hearts of local Burmese people.

Stop to taste delicious food by the Yangon River

After paying respects and touring the pagoda, I, mr.hotsia, suggest visiting the nearby Yangon River waterfront at the ferry pier. Here, traditional two-level boats unique to Myanmar ferry locals and tourists across the river.

Besides enjoying the simple and charming lifestyle of Yangon locals, there are street food stalls I love, especially a Burmese woman’s skewered pork stew stall next to Botahtaung Pagoda. I tried it and can say it’s very delicious—the pork is tender and flavorful with Burmese spices distinct from ours. If you visit Yangon, don’t forget to support her stall.

Yangon, the old capital that still holds charm

For those interested in exploring Yangon in depth, I have written detailed information about traveling fromYangon Airport to the city centerThe journey is convenient and affordable. From the airport, you can hire a taxi to the city for no more than 8 US dollars.

If you have more time, I recommend taking the Yangon Circle Line Train, the best way to see daily life in Yangon and truly experience the city’s atmosphere.I have shared detailed experiences about this before. This train line takes you through both urban and rural communities around Yangon.

Connecting to nearby attractions

If you travel to Yangon and want to explore nearby areas, I recommend visiting Bago, about 80 kilometers north. Bago is a historic city full of temples and important Buddha statues.I have written detailed guides on how to explore Bago by yourself. There you will see Mon people’s lifestyle and an old city with authentic Burmese charm.

Summary of experiences mr.hotsia wants to share

Thep Thanjai or Botahtaung Pagoda in Yangon is not just a beautiful tourist spot but a place full of faith and the lifestyle of Burmese people worth studying and experiencing yourself. Standing there, worshiping Thep Thanjai, walking along the Yangon River, and enjoying delicious skewered pork stew is an experience that made me, mr.hotsia, feel closer to Myanmar.

If you are planning to visit Yangon, don’t forget Botahtaung Pagoda and Thep Thanjai. This place is not just a photo spot but a location full of meaning and stories waiting for you to experience firsthand.
