It might be because Thai lifestyle is closely tied to temples since childhood, and if given a day off, people tend to choose other places like the sea or mountains first. However, recently more Thai people have shown interest, partly due to new exciting attractions like Ayothaya Floating Market, which has increased Thai tourists visiting this province. Ayutthaya is an ancient city surrounded by the Pasak River to the east and the Chao Phraya River to the west, becoming a city in the middle of water with strong fortifications that are not easily conquered.
(I read too much of the novel "Dragon Twins Fight Ten Directions" 555) There are many temples and ancient towns on this island. I recommend waking up early to visit various places before the sun gets too hot, or it won't be enjoyable. Spend about two hours in the morning touring different temples. At noon, try visiting Ayothaya Floating Market to see why it is so famous and talked about. There is another floating market called Khlong Sa Bua Floating Market, where students perform shows. If you want to try elephant riding, the best times are in the evening or early morning when it's cooler.
After that, try Ayutthaya's famous boat noodles, known throughout Thailand. From what I asked my friend who is from Ayutthaya, Pa Lek's Boat Noodles next to the Telephone Organization is the best. I have tried it myself; it's really delicious, no exaggeration (click to see my tasting episode). Another shop in the market is called Giant Meatball Noodles. I found it a bit too sweet, but if you like that style, give it a try (see the story about Giant Meatball Noodles).
In the evening, don't miss listening to Uncle Tuy's voice at Uncle Tuy's Mouthy Rice Porridge shop. Why is it good? It's fun and satisfying. You can enjoy the taste while listening, which gives a different flavor. These are the places Mr. Hotsia recommends. Ayutthaya province also has a unique vehicle called the Frog Car. Each province has different local transport names, such as Prachuap's Chicken Car, Chiang Mai's Red Car, mostly called tuk-tuks, three-wheelers, or songthaews. But in Ayutthaya, it's called the Frog Car, a vehicle that looks like a frog with many colorful designs.
Read about the Frog Car and see the photos I took here. Let me recommend some accommodations in Ayutthaya so you won't have to wander around like me. When I stayed, I chose Promsuk Hotel, a newly opened hotel in a government building. It's a good hotel, affordable, located right in the old city, and has Wi-Fi. I recommend booking hotels in Ayutthaya before traveling to get cheaper prices than walk-ins. Click here to book hotels in Ayutthaya through Agoda (see how to book hotels online here).
