On the opposite side of the Mekong River is the city of Sayphouthong, Savannakhet Province. This area is a temporary relaxation point, not a permanent border checkpoint. I passed through Don Tan District to enjoy the Mekong riverside view and observe how the local people live.
I did not stay here. One must not miss the great drum when arriving at Don Tan District, located at Matchimawat Temple in the district center by the Mekong River. It is the largest great drum in Thailand, discovered in 1938 on the Mekong riverbank. The great drum is a traditional cultural artifact of the Zhuang people from Guangxi Province. I have read that it was used in rituals to worship frogs and pray for rain, a tradition still alive today. The great drum culture spread into Southeast Asia, including Thailand.
