Phayao Breakfast: The Warmth of a Small Town by Kwan Lake

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit Phayao, a province that many may not be familiar with. But when it comes to the atmosphere and way of life, this place feels like a second home to many. One thing that impressed me deeply on this trip was the “Phayao breakfast,” which is not just about taste but a way to experience the local lifestyle through morning dishes.

One morning, I traveled toPhayao Morning MarketA lively market starting as early as 5 or 6 AM, with shops lined up offering fresh colorful produce, local vegetables, daily necessities, and of course, the delicious breakfast that is the heart of the market.

On this trip, I tried many breakfast dishes, starting with “Khao Kan Jin” or grilled sticky rice with pork filling. The taste is slightly sweet and salty, wrapped in fragrant banana leaves. The first bite gives a warm feeling of genuine homemade local food. Then I had “Phayao Khao Soi,” which differs from Chiang Mai’s version by having a less thick curry broth. The flavor is mild but full of local spices and herbs. Eating it in the morning with fresh vegetables and chili paste is absolutely delightful.

Another thing I didn’t miss was tryingUncle Dam's Pad Thai, PhayaoA shop recommended by locals. Uncle Dam uses fresh ingredients. This Pad Thai has chewy soft noodles, a rich and balanced sauce, fresh shrimp, and perfectly fried omelet pieces. Eating Pad Thai on a street corner in the morning feels like truly experiencing the real life of Phayao locals, not just typical tourism.

Whether you are a coffee lover or not, I recommend tryingTraditional Coffee and Soft-Boiled Eggs, PhayaoA small coffee shop filled with the aroma of traditionally roasted coffee. The soft-boiled eggs served alongside are perfectly cooked. The softness of the eggs combined with the strong coffee makes the Phayao breakfast taste perfectly balanced. I recorded this inTraditional Coffee and Soft-Boiled Eggs, Phayao videofor you to watch as an example.

What impressed me more than the food’s taste was seeing the lifestyle of Phayao people starting their day simply and generously. Whether it’s the sticky rice vendor smiling and greeting warmly, the Pad Thai cook carefully preparing each dish, or locals sitting together drinking traditional coffee and chatting casually.

If you have more time, I recommend taking a stroll atPhayao Morning MarketOr if you want to see the lifestyle of people in the suburban area, try visitingMae Chai Morning Market, PhayaoEach market has its own charm and unique specialties.

For those who enjoy lakeside atmosphere, not far from Phayao town, I have written aboutKwan Phayao: Lotus Boat Tourwhich you can visit for a walk after breakfast. It’s a perfect way to complete a special day off in this small town.

All of these are just part of the happiness I, mr.hotsia, experienced from Phayao breakfast. It’s not only about the dishes but also an opening to the life and culture of this town. If you have the chance, don’t forget to come and experience it yourself. You will realize how warm and charming the little joys of a morning in Phayao truly are.
