Travel trip to Maha Sarakham with mr.hotsia: A long town by the canal, authentic Isan lifestyle
After traveling through Isan from neighboring countries like Cambodia and Laos, passing through Ubon Ratchathani province, the next part of this trip is Maha Sarakham province. I chose to travel by bus from Kalasin to this city. My main goal on this trip was to experience the real lifestyle of the Isan people in Maha Sarakham, find delicious food, and explore the unique city atmosphere.
Maha Sarakham is a large province with many districts such as Kae Dam, Kosum Phisai, Kantharawichai, Chiang Yuen, Borabue, Na Chueak, Phayakkhaphum Phisai, Wapi Pathum, Na Dun, Yang Sisurat, and Kut Rang. But on this trip, I focused on Maha Sarakham city, which is the provincial center. It is notable for being a long town along an important canal that flows through the city center to Maha Sarakham University and Rajabhat Maha Sarakham University.
The lively atmosphere of Maha Sarakham city by the canal
I walked along the canal in Maha Sarakham city and was struck by the sight of joggers running along the canal. The water in the canal was clear and clean without any foul smell. This impressed me greatly because many cities in Isan still have polluted water problems, but here it is well maintained. Additionally, along the canal are many restaurants and bars open late. There are several good atmosphere barbecue pork restaurants where I stopped to listen to music and taste the food, especially the chill vibe by the canal that made me feel truly relaxed.
Student lifestyle and city zoning
Maha Sarakham is a city with several universities, so it is no surprise to see students bustling along the streets. The zoning of restaurants and entertainment venues near the universities provides great convenience for students. Each place has a different style, ranging from spicy Isan food restaurants to barbecue pork and bars with soft music, suitable for socializing after class.
Accommodation in Maha Sarakham: Options and mr.hotsia's real experience
Accommodation in Maha Sarakham was a challenging issue for me because internet coverage in this city is still limited. Some hotels I tried to stay at had to be left due to unstable internet, which travelers should be prepared for. However, good accommodation options I recommend are near the Maha Sarakham Bus Station, such as Taksila Hotel, New Pattana Hotel, or Sunthorn Hotel near the police station. Staying in this area is convenient for travel and finding food because the restaurant zone is a short distance away and easy to reach by tuk-tuk or car.
For budget travelers, daily rental apartments are a good choice. I personally stayed at Nakhon Sawan rooms opposite the police station for only 500 baht per night, which was very worthwhile for a solo traveler like me. I recommend booking accommodation in advance online to get the best price and ensure availability.Cheap and good hotels in Maha Sarakham, click hereTo choose accommodation according to your budget
Food and restaurants by the canal: Highlights not to miss
What impressed me most in Maha Sarakham was the delicious variety of food available. The canal-side restaurants where I stopped to listen to music and sip drinks in a chill atmosphere are perfect for tourists wanting to experience authentic local vibes. Besides barbecue pork and spicy Isan larb, there are dessert shops and noodle restaurants I recommend trying.
If you have the chance to travel through nearby provinces like Kalasin, I recommend stopping to tryMam Kalasinwhich is a local dish I really like from my own experience, especially at Pa Taen's restaurant near Kalasin Bus Station. I tried it before taking a van to Maha Sarakham. It is authentic local food with delicious taste and very affordable price.
Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia
For me, Maha Sarakham is not just a passing city but a lively place with warm people, a simple yet charming lifestyle, canal-side restaurants offering a relaxing atmosphere, and convenient accommodation near the bus station. This makes me want to visit again next time. Although I stayed only one night on this trip and did not travel to other districts, I am confident Maha Sarakham has much more to discover for travelers who love exploring cities and authentic local culture.
