Travel to Roi Et: A peaceful city in the heart of Isan that mr.hotsia must share
When talking about Roi Et province, many might think of a large province in central Isan full of agricultural land and simple lifestyles. But for mr.hotsia, Roi Et has a unique charm. Although the city looks quiet and most people choose to work in Bangkok like many provinces across Thailand and neighboring countries such as Laos, Vietnam, or Cambodia, this is the reason I like Roi Et even more. Because when I actually visited for four full nights, I experienced a livable city and saw a simple and warm way of life that is not easy to find in big cities.
Bueng Phlan Chai: The central city park that mr.hotsia loves
One of the important symbols of Roi Et city that mr.hotsia recommends visiting isBueng Phlan ChaiA large recreational area in the city center with a shady atmosphere perfect for walking or leisurely cycling. This pond is surrounded by a variety of flowering and ornamental plants and a wide water area full of many kinds of fish. There is also a boat rental service for paddling in the pond. The evening atmosphere here impressed me a lot because locals gather to exercise, paddle boats, or just stroll and enjoy the cool breeze. Bueng Phlan Chai is not just an ordinary park but also a hub for cultural activities and various performances of the province.
Markets and Local Food: Experience the flavors of Roi Et with mr.hotsia
As for food in Roi Et, it is not inferior to anywhere else. I explored and tasted a variety of local dishes, especially the Jum Jum Rim Khlong 39 restaurant, a famous spot in the city. This place is not only good for authentic Isan-style jum jum but I especially liked the location where you can sit and enjoy the cool breeze while watching the city atmosphere and people passing by on motorcycles.Jum Jum Rim Roi Etis an example of street food that mr.hotsia believes anyone visiting Roi Et must try.
Additionally, I also stopped by to tryBeijing Honey Roast Duckwhich is an old restaurant in the city. The crispy pork here is very well done with a rich, sweet and savory sauce. Although the honey roast duck was a bit tough, the old-fashioned atmosphere made me feel like I traveled back in time to the authentic Roi Et of the past.
If you want to try something spicy, don't forget to taste the unique-flavored Roi Et papaya salad called Tam Luk Chan.Roi Et Papaya Salad Tam Luk ChanHere, it’s not just about the taste but also the freshness of the ingredients and the meticulous preparation.
The lifestyle and Roi Et city that impressed mr.hotsia
During my four full nights in Roi Et, I saw the friendly and simple life of the locals. Most people still live by farming and local trading. It may not be as hectic as big cities, but this calmness made me feel relaxed and want to stay longer.
Districts around the province such as Kaset Wisai, Pathum Rat, Chaturaphak Phiman, and Thawat Buri have interesting stories waiting for travelers like me to explore, including other districts like Phanom Phrai, Phon Thong, Nong Phok, and Selaphum, which are full of nature and culture that still preserve the true Isan identity well.
Advice and travel tips by mr.hotsia
For traveling to Roi Et, I chose to take a bus from Ubon Ratchathani, which is convenient and affordable. Within the city, you can easily use local songthaews or taxis. I recommend taking an evening walk at Bueng Phlan Chai or finding street food stalls to taste local dishes. If you like a relaxed atmosphere like me, Jum Jum Rim Khlong 39 is a must-visit. For those who prefer classic signature dishes, Beijing Honey Roast is also a great choice.
Also, booking accommodation in advance is something I recommend because during festivals or long holidays, there are many tourists and locals returning home, causing rooms to fill up quickly. Booking early also gets you better prices.
