Mother's Rice Water: 50 Years Since the Rice Cooker Came, Never Tasted It Again Until Today

When talking about “rice water,” many might wonder what it is. This rice water refers to the liquid left from traditional rice cooking before electric rice cookers replaced the method. As a child, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the authentic rural lifestyle in Loei Province, my mother's hometown. This rice water was something my mother made and consumed for over 50 years before electric rice cookers became a household staple. Since then, rice water disappeared from our dining table permanently. Now, I have decided to go back and try making it again to revive childhood memories.

Mother's rice water is not just ordinary boiled rice liquid; it is a treasure of memories, a simple way of life, and a deeply connected flavor with my family and the Loei community I love. In the past, my mother used an earthen pot or traditional rice cooker that required manual fire control, using firewood as fuel and constant attention until the rice was perfectly cooked. The resulting rice water had a sweet, mellow taste similar to fermented rice water but without fermentation, retaining the smoothness from freshly cooked sticky rice.

After electric rice cookers took over our homes, rice water became rare because electric cookers cook rice dry and evenly, leaving no rice water as before. Growing up with hot sticky rice and warm rice water, I, mr.hotsia, felt something was missing in daily life.

This time in Loei Province, I took my mother back to try cooking rice the traditional way again at our home in Dan Sai District, Loei Province, not far from Chiang Khan and Phu Kradueng, which I have shared about before (read more aboutPhi Ta Khon, Dan Sai, Loei ProvinceandSea of Mist at Pha Nok Aen – Phu Kradueng). My mother used an old earthen pot kept for a long time, lit firewood, and carefully stirred the rice. The fragrant aroma of rice began to fill the cool morning air covered with thick mist.

While waiting for the rice to cook, I recalled the atmosphere in Chiang Khan during winter, with mist covering the Mekong River and the bustling morning market filled with people making merit and old coffee shops where locals chatted (if you like that atmosphere, try readingWinter Travel in Chiang Khan). The scent of the rice water my mother made resembled the warmth and memories of those times.

When the rice was done, the rice water was poured into a bowl. The slightly sweet taste from sticky rice cooked in the earthen pot reminded me of my mother's words: “This rice water is good for health and helps warm the body.” I tasted the rice water with hot sticky rice, feeling like I traveled back to a time without modern technology replacing us.

Mother's rice water is not just food; it symbolizes simplicity and family bonds in the rural Loei community that still preserves traditional ways well. Although this province has many interesting stories and cultures, such as the Phi Ta Khon legend in Dan Sai or Mekong River prawns in Chiang Khan (read more aboutMekong River Prawns in Chiang Khan), the thing that impressed me most was the small story of mother's rice water that never fades with time.

For anyone wanting to experience simple rural life in Loei Province, I recommend visiting communities that strongly preserve their traditions. If you have the chance to try traditional rice water, I believe you will deeply understand the meaning of “the taste of memories.”

Finally, I, mr.hotsia, invite everyone to open their hearts and revisit the past by doing things from childhood, whether cooking rice the traditional way, making local dishes, or traveling to experience village life in Loei Province, which is full of fascinating stories and uniquely charming tourist spots.
