Samui Fire Spinning @ Coco Tam, Bo Phut Walking Street, Samui
When talking about Koh Samui, many people think of beautiful seas, clear water, and clean white beaches. But for me, mr.hotsia, the fun of Samui doesn’t stop at the morning sunlight or the evening sea waves. One night at “Bo Phut Walking Street,” known locally as “Coco Tam,” was an experience I want to share without holding back.
Bo Phut is located on the northeast side of Koh Samui. It is a small community that has preserved its local way of life firmly. At night, Coco Tam Walking Street becomes a lively meeting point full of unique colors and excitement. The highlight here is the fire spinning performance, which I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience myself. I must say, it’s a show full of energy and strong charm.
I wandered along the walking street filled with handmade shops and local eateries bustling with activity. The scent of herbs and grilled seafood wafted intermittently, making my stomach growl constantly. But what made me stop and watch was the fire spinning performance by local artists, who skillfully and bravely combined their expertise with an exciting art form. They spun fire skillfully amid a mix of traditional folk music and modern rhythms that created a captivating atmosphere.
Here, mr.hotsia recommends arriving around 6:00 PM to stroll through the market before the fire show begins at night. The Coco Tam market offers many delicious treats to try, especially fresh seafood from nearby piers, as well as local dishes that are hard to find in typical tourist spots, such as the fragrant rice restaurant I previously wrote about inFragrant Rice Restaurant, Local Food of Koh Samuiwhich is not far from Coco Tam. Eating hot fragrant rice with a special dipping sauce after a day of walking is a delight that mr.hotsia never forgets.
Besides food, the Coco Tam market is full of handmade souvenirs from locals, including jewelry, woven crafts, and home decorations with authentic Samui style. Walking around, you can observe the simple and warm lifestyle of the villagers. The vendors smile brightly, making you feel truly part of this community.
For those who want to start the day with a simple yet flavorful local breakfast, I recommend tryingfried chicken with sticky rice breakfast at Koh Samui hotelsin a local style found in Samui. After the fire spinning night, the next morning I chose to recharge with this local food before exploring the island further.
If you enjoy the atmosphere of fresh markets and fresh seafood, don’t forget to visit the Surat Thani morning market as well. I have written about it in detail inFresh Seafood at Surat Thani Morning Marketwhich is not far from Samui. There, you will see the fishermen’s way of life and enjoy seafood so fresh it seems to come straight from the sea to your plate.
Visiting Bo Phut Walking Street this time helped me, mr.hotsia, understand more that Samui is not just about the sea or luxury resorts but also about fascinating local life and art. The fire spinning at Coco Tam is not just an ordinary show; it is a preservation and continuation of culture that the people of Samui proudly present to tourists.
If you visit Samui, don’t forget to stop by Bo Phut Walking Street and experience Samui fire spinning yourself. I guarantee the excitement and wonderful memories will stay with you along with the lights shining on this special night.
