Shallow water shark watching at Koh Tao with mr.hotsia, a unique experience in Surat Thani
When talking about islands famous for the beauty of the sea and natural charm in Surat Thani province, Koh Tao must be one of the favorites for many travelers, including mr.hotsia. The last time I had the chance to visit Koh Tao, one thing not to miss was “shallow water shark watching,” an activity that allows us to get close to small sharks swimming in shallow water without deep diving. This is an experience I was so impressed with that I had to share.
Koh Tao is a small island in Surat Thani province, located in the Gulf of Thailand. It is known as an excellent diving spot for both beginners and professionals. But for mr.hotsia, shallow water shark watching is a uniquely charming activity because you don’t need deep diving equipment or special skills. Just wear a life jacket and walk into the shallow coral reef area. The small sharks here swim close without fear of humans, as if they are familiar with tourists admiring their beauty.
Getting to Koh Tao is not difficult. I chose to take a ferry from nearby Koh Samui. The trip is convenient and comfortable, especially if you come from Samui Airport. After boarding the boat for a while, you can see the clear blue sea and coral reefs even before reaching the island. Anyone who loves natural atmosphere and clear sea should bring an underwater camera because there are many beautiful photo spots here.
How to do shallow water shark watching and things to know before entering the water
mr.hotsia recommends preparing well before entering the water, wearing a life jacket, and listening carefully to the local guide’s instructions for safety and to help us get close to the sharks without disturbing them. Another important thing is not to touch the sharks or coral because the nature here is still abundant and must be preserved for future tourists to see as we have the chance to.
Most of the sharks seen are small sharks, also called “shallow water whale sharks,” which are harmless to humans. I sat in the shallow water watching the sharks swim peacefully. Some came so close I could almost touch them, as if they were welcoming us in a friendly way. This is an experience not easily found elsewhere.
The atmosphere around the island and dining after shallow water shark watching
After shallow water shark watching, mr.hotsia recommends taking a walk in the fishing village or the morning market of Koh Tao. It’s full of fresh seafood and local dishes to enjoy. Seafood lovers must not miss trying menus from local restaurants using fresh ingredients from the sea, such as grilled squid, grilled shrimp, or spicy seafood salad with bold flavors that make you want to order again. This place reminded me of the fresh seafood experience atSurat Thani Morning Marketwhich is nearby and equally fresh.
If you want to add more deliciousness, I recommend tryingNang Yum, a local spicy salad from Koh Taowith its uniquely bold flavor. Or if you like a chill seaside atmosphere, there are many restaurants to relax and watch the sunset, creating great memories alongside the beauty of Koh Tao.
Koh Tao in mr.hotsia’s eyes and feelings to share
From my real experience, I, mr.hotsia, found that Koh Tao is not just an ordinary beautiful island but a place full of vitality and a deep relationship between people and nature. Shallow water shark watching here is not just a tourist activity but a lesson that teaches us about the gentleness of nature and living together with mutual respect.
For anyone planning to travel to islands in southern Thailand, don’t forget to add Koh Tao to your list and try the shallow water shark watching experience with mr.hotsia. I guarantee it will be fun and unforgettable.
