Koh Tao: A small paradise in the Gulf of Thailand that mr.hotsia must share
When talking about a small island full of natural charm, clear seas, and a chill atmosphere blending relaxation and adventure, “Koh Tao” in Surat Thani province is the answer that I, mr.hotsia, must rank as one of the destinations you have to experience at least once.
My journey to Koh Tao started from Surat Thani province, the gateway to the islands in the Gulf of Thailand. From Don Sak Pier, the ferry ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The atmosphere on the boat is exciting and full of hope to see the beauty of this small island. The first thing I, mr.hotsia, felt was the tranquility and the well-preserved natural environment waiting for visitors to immerse themselves in.
Atmosphere and lifestyle on Koh Tao
Koh Tao is not only about beautiful beaches with fine white sand and clear blue water but also a fishing community that still lives simply and deeply connected to the sea. Walking through the island’s villages, I, mr.hotsia, saw the warm lifestyle of the locals—from fresh fishing, seafood preparation, to exchanging daily life stories full of smiles.
For those who love diving, Koh Tao is a paradise for both beginners and professional divers. The dive spots around the island are famous for their coral diversity and various fish species. I, mr.hotsia, once tried deep diving at Ao Muang, where the clear water allowed me to see colorful coral and fish vividly. It was an unforgettable experience.
Fresh seafood and must-try local flavors
Food is another highlight of Koh Tao that I, mr.hotsia, must say is so delicious I want to come back again. The fresh seafood here is unbeatable, caught daily from the sea—shrimp, shellfish, crab, fish—cooked simply but with bold flavors typical of authentic Southern Thai cuisine.
One restaurant I, mr.hotsia, recommend is a small local eatery by the beach serving a signature dish called “Nang Yum” (spicy pork skin salad) eaten with hot steamed rice, enhanced with fresh bird’s eye chili and lime. The taste is a perfect balance of sour, spicy, and salty—a rare and very local dish.Nang Yum, a local dish of Koh Tao)
Besides that, I also had the chance to visit the morning market on Koh Tao, bustling with fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood. It reminded me of the Surat Thani morning market, full of fresh seafood and a variety of local foods as well.Fresh seafood at Surat Thani morning market)
Accommodation and chill seaside living on Koh Tao
Koh Tao offers a range of accommodations from luxury resorts to small homestays with a warm and friendly atmosphere. I, mr.hotsia, stayed at a small beachfront resort where I could open the door and see the sea right away. This feeling made my sleep restful and waking up ready to experience the sea again.
My favorite time in the evening was walking along the beach, watching the sunset casting golden-orange light on the sea—a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. This kind of ambiance is hard to find in big cities, making a trip to Koh Tao a truly relaxing experience.
Connecting with Surat Thani: Southern charm not to be missed
Speaking of Surat Thani overall, besides Koh Tao, I, mr.hotsia, also recommend trying local dishes and fresh seafood at the morning market by the Surat Thani river, such asSea bass congeewhich has a mellow flavor, or you can trySea bass congee at the Law Office restaurant by the river in front of Surat Thani marketwhich is also famous.
If you visit nearby Koh Samui, having fried chicken with sticky rice for breakfast at a Koh Samui hotel is another impressive experience I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend.Fried chicken with sticky rice breakfast at a Koh Samui hotel)
Summary of mr.hotsia’s impressions of Koh Tao
For me, mr.hotsia, Koh Tao is not just a small island in the Gulf of Thailand but a place to experience the tranquility of nature and the traditional lifestyle of Southern people, combined with fun activities like diving and eating fresh seafood that is rare in big cities. Most importantly, the “chill” feeling here is hard to find nowadays.
If you are looking for a destination that offers more than just relaxation, Koh Tao is the answer that I, mr.hotsia, sincerely confirm. Don’t forget to follow more of my travel and food experiences on my YouTube channel.Watch Koh Tao video) I guarantee you will feel like traveling together with me.
