Samut Sakhon, the southern gateway city you must stop by with mr.hotsia
Speaking of my southern route, I have to saySamut Sakhonis a province I pass through so often that I almost know every corner. Whether you're heading to the southern sea or visiting provinces along the lower Gulf of Thailand, everyone must pass through Samut Sakhon as a connecting point. The charm of Samut Sakhon is not just being a transit point but its simple lifestyle and nature. The sea breeze mixed with the mud from the salt fields where I once walked and truly felt the life of the locals.
Don Hoi Lot, the star tourist attraction of Samut Sakhon
If you ask what the highlight I like most in Samut Sakhon is, the simple answer isDon Hoi LotYes, Don Hoi Lot is a seaside community famous for razor clams, marine creatures that feed in the mud here. The locals live a simple life, paddling small boats to collect razor clams during low tide. I once walked on the long wooden pier stretching into the sea, watching the sunset. The scent of the sea mixed with mud here is truly the breath of this town.
For those who want to experience the lifestyle up close, Don Hoi Lot offers several homestays to choose from. But I must mention that most homestays only accept groups. I once asked to stay alone but was told no; groups are preferred for convenience as they manage meals and activities together. If you have friends or family with you, the atmosphere will be much warmer.
Exploring the districts of Samut Sakhon with mr.hotsia
Samut Sakhon is not just about Don Hoi Lot. The province is divided into three main districts:Mueang Samut Sakhon, Krathum Baen, andBan PhaeoI, mr.hotsia, have visited all these districts and would like to share my experiences.
Mueang Samut Sakhon
Mueang Samut Sakhon is the provincial center with bustling fresh markets and fishing ports. Here, you will see fresh seafood trade and roadside eateries with flavors so good you must stop and eat. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking through these fresh markets because I get to see fresh ingredients and chat with vendors, truly understanding the locals' way of life.
Krathum Baen
Krathum Baen district features both fruit orchards and vast salt fields. I once drove through this route and stopped to admire the beautifully arranged salt fields. It felt like stepping into a landscape that still preserves its traditional way of life. There are also ancient temples and warm communities here. If you like peaceful rural atmospheres, Krathum Baen will not disappoint.
Ban Phaeo
Ban Phaeo is a district adjacent to many canals and rivers, resulting in fertile fruit orchards and salt fields. I, mr.hotsia, once strolled along the canal and tasted local dishes at Ban Phaeo restaurants. The locals here are very kind, with noodle shops and seafood eateries offering home-style flavors that are so delicious you have to recommend them.
Traveling and tasting local food with mr.hotsia
Getting around Samut Sakhon is quite convenient. I, mr.hotsia, use a private car and sometimes local minibuses, which help access small communities well. Regarding food, I recommend not missing boat noodles and fresh seafood from the seaside markets. There are also local eateries hidden in small alleys that outsiders might not find easily. I secretly enjoy trying simple stir-fried holy basil dishes found in fresh markets because of their rich and balanced flavors.
If anyone is interested in detailed local cooking methods, I recommend a video I once watched calledStir-fried Holy Basil at Khlong Thai Rangsit Boat Noodle ShopAlthough it’s not directly in Samut Sakhon, it’s a great example of Thai food that food lovers should not miss.
Summary of mr.hotsia’s impressions of Samut Sakhon
For me, mr.hotsia, Samut Sakhon is not just a transit point but a province full of life stories, local ways, and nature that remains intact unlike big cities. This is the answer for those who want to experience a genuine rural seaside atmosphere. If you have the chance to stay at a homestay in Don Hoi Lot or taste fresh seafood in Mueang Samut Sakhon, I guarantee you will fall in love just like me.
