Uttaradit: A province that I, mr.hotsia, definitely recommend opening your heart to

Many may overlook Uttaradit thinking it is just a small, ordinary province, but after I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to stay and explore here for three full nights, I can say it has much more charm and interesting stories than expected.

Phu Du International Checkpoint - A must-visit Thai-Laos border crossing

My trip started in Sam Khok District, Uttaradit Province. Here, there isPhu Du International Border Checkpointwhich has been operational since 2013. It serves as a connection between Thailand and Ban Huai Kaew, Paklai City, Xayaburi Province, Laos. This checkpoint is only 30 kilometers from Paklai town along the Mekong River. I personally explored this route and can say that nature lovers and those who enjoy leisurely border crossings should not miss following the travel information I have gathered about Xayaburi Province. Here

Getting to Phu Du checkpoint is very convenient if you drive yourself. I, mr.hotsia, chose to drive because it allowed me to freely visit various nearby attractions. However, if you don't drive, you can also take a bus or train, which offers a genuine local lifestyle experience.

Laplae Town - The city of legends where lying is forbidden

Not far from Phu Du checkpoint, I stopped byLaplae Towna district known as the “Widow City” with a unique legend that lying is forbidden! According to the legend, anyone who lies in this town cannot leave. I, mr.hotsia, experienced the atmosphere firsthand and found that this place has a very interesting cultural and historical identity. For those who want to learn more about Laplae’s deep stories, you can read myDurian Long Laplae articlewhich includes fascinating information about the ghost Banbod and Laplae legends.

Durian Long Laplae and Durian Lin Laplae - The finest souvenirs from Uttaradit

Another highlight I, mr.hotsia, must share is the province’s famous fruit, which isDurian Long LaplaeandDurian Lin LaplaeThese are seedless durians that are very popular. I had the chance to taste durians from an award-winning garden, the runner-up in the world, at “Pranom’s Garden.” The fruit here is dense, sweet, and smooth in flavor, and importantly, the smell is not as strong as typical durians, making it suitable for those who want to try durian but are afraid of the strong odor.Read the full story of Durian Long Laplae here

When I visited, street prices for durian were about 500 baht per kilogram, and steamed durian was around 700 baht per piece. This may seem expensive to some, but considering the quality and taste, it is definitely worth it.

Huai Mun Pineapple - A rising export fruit

Besides durian, Uttaradit Province also hasHuai Mun Pineapplewhich is grown in Huai Mun Subdistrict, Nam Pat District. This pineapple variety is gaining popularity and is continuously exported abroad, especially to Malaysia, where I saw the export packing during my visit.

The planting area for Huai Mun pineapples increases by over 100% every year, showing unstoppable growing demand. It is also an affordable fruit that you should try before prices rise further.

Lifestyle and Accommodation in Uttaradit City

For accommodation in Uttaradit city, I, mr.hotsia, chose to stay atP. Vanich 2 Hotelwhich is located by the Nan River near the morning market, allowing a genuine local lifestyle experience. This hotel is affordable at only 300 baht per night and offers a riverside view perfect for morning and evening strolls.

If you visit Phu Du checkpoint, there are budget hotels near the intersection ranging from 400-600 baht, and air conditioning is not necessary because the weather is pleasantly cool even during hot months.

Local Food in Uttaradit: From Rice with Curry to Kom Faek Roti

Food in Uttaradit is another aspect I, mr.hotsia, was very impressed with. Rice with curry is inexpensive and widely available in markets and local eateries. There are also interesting restaurants such asKom Faek Rotifamous for its large crispy dough and unique flavor. You must try it as I recommended in my article.Uttaradit street food - Rice with curry in Uttaradit

Another notable place is the grilled pork restaurant “Rom Dee Mookata,” owned by a friend of my fan page. It is popular among tourists and locals alike. Although I haven’t had the chance to try it yet, if you visit Uttaradit, don’t forget to stop by.

Eating and Drinking Areas and Evening Strolls in Uttaradit

For those who enjoy evening walks and food hunting, Uttaradit has two areas I, mr.hotsia, recommend:Sai Klang Districtwhich offers many restaurants and bars, andthe night market areain front of Friday Hotel on Borom Asat Road, a lively area perfect for strolling and eating after sunset.

City Trips and Must-Do Activities

During my three days here, my trip focused mainly on city exploration. I started by walking through the morning market in Uttaradit city to observe local life, then drove to see the Durian Long Laplae and Lin Laplae orchards, as well as the Huai Mun pineapple farms in Nam Pat District. You can choose to stay near Phu Du checkpoint or return to the city for accommodation, whichever suits your style.
