Local Cuisine of Hat Yai: Authentic Flavors from the Streets and Markets of Songkhla City

When talking about Hat Yai, the major city in Songkhla province, it’s not just the bustling markets and the diverse cultural lifestyle that stand out, but also a paradise for food lovers like mr.hotsia who crave bold and deeply traditional local flavors. The street food here is an experience you must try because missing out on Hat Yai’s local cuisine is like not truly visiting Songkhla at all.

I, mr.hotsia, started my journey wandering through Kim Yong Market, a famous market in the heart of Hat Yai. This place is like a hub of delicious local foods of many kinds, including the popular radish cake that sells so well people have to queue up (Radish Cake at Kim Yong Market, Hat Yai) a snack made by vendors using secret recipes, crispy on the outside and soft inside, with a unique aroma of spices.

Not far from this market, I also stopped to taste the famous pork blood soup in this area, a favorite breakfast for locals and tourists wanting to experience authentic flavors. The pork blood soup at Kim Yong Market has a mild, rich broth, fresh clean offal, and large pieces of pork served with hot steamed rice, making it one of my favorite dishes.Pork Blood Soup at Kim Yong Market, Hat YaiIt’s the starting point for a true local food experience.

Enjoy Eating Around the Walking Street and City Area

In the evening in Hat Yai, I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a stroll at the Clock Tower Walking Street. This area is full of small eateries and the enticing aroma of Chanthaburi-style Pad Thai, famous for being so delicious that people line up (Chanthaburi-style Pad Thai, a Specialty of Songkhla at the Clock Tower Walking Street) The Pad Thai here is packed with ingredients including fresh shrimp, crispy squid, finely roasted peanuts, and uniquely soft and chewy noodles. The sauce is perfectly balanced with sweet, salty, and sour flavors.

There is also a pork tail noodle shop that I always visit whenever I come to this city because of its clean offal, fragrant broth with spices, and rich, balanced taste (Traveling the 3 Southern Border Provinces 1/15: Eating Pork Tail Noodles at Yinkit, Hat Yai) which serves as an appetizer before hunting for other foods in this area.

Savor Seafood and Local Dishes in Songkhla Province

Not far from Hat Yai, Songkhla province also has Ranot district, famous for fresh seafood and local dishes made from local ingredients. For example, the spicy stir-fried sea catfish that I, mr.hotsia, tried and loved for its fiery heat and freshness of the sea catfish (Spicy Stir-fried Sea Catfish, Ranot, Songkhla) or the traditional fried sea mullet net dish, a fishing and cooking technique preserved over time (Fried Sea Mullet Net, Ranot, Songkhla)
