Yok Yor, Kusuman District, Sakon Nakhon Province: A travel experience full of local charm

When talking about Sakon Nakhon Province, many might think of the peacefulness of a town surrounded by nature, forests, mountains, and a simple way of life. But if you want a deeper experience, try heading toKusuman Districtwhich is one of the destinations I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend everyone to experience for themselves.

Kusuman District is located in the western part of Sakon Nakhon Province. It is an area that still preserves local ways of life very well, especially the "Yok Yor" activity that I had the chance to join during my visit. Yok Yor is a traditional method of fishing using a large net, reflecting a deep relationship between people and nature.

Travel and Atmosphere in Kusuman District

For traveling to Kusuman District, I chose the route from Sakon Nakhon city, driving for just over an hour. The route takes you through lush green rice fields and complex mountains. The atmosphere here is quite peaceful, perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities. If you want to truly experience local life, I recommend waking up early to visitSakon Nakhon Morning Marketwhich is a hub for fresh produce and delicious local food that you must try.

Upon arriving in Kusuman, I had the chance to talk with local villagers. Many still use the Yok Yor fishing method passed down through generations. It is a team effort requiring unity and specialized skills. During my visit, it was the season of abundant freshwater fish, allowing me to witness the lively scene of villagers joyfully fishing with Yok Yor.

Yok Yor: An Activity You Must Try When Visiting Kusuman

The Yok Yor experience in Kusuman District is unique because they still adhere to traditional methods, using large nets dragged through clear streams. I, mr.hotsia, even helped lift the net myself. It was both tiring and fun at the same time. When fresh fish were caught, the villagers would immediately help prepare traditional dishes.

The food I tasted after Yok Yor was very fresh freshwater fish, sweet and tender, cooked in authentic Isan style, which reminded me of Sakon Nakhon's famous dish,Lek Lap Ped (Spicy Minced Duck Salad)Or if you want a simple meal while traveling, I recommendSakon Nakhon Grilled Chickenwhich I, mr.hotsia, have recommended in previous reviews — so delicious I had to order several more plates.

Lifestyle and Culture Still Alive in Kusuman

Besides the Yok Yor activity, Kusuman also has a very interesting community culture. The locals firmly preserve traditional customs and beliefs. I had the opportunity to join a small local ceremony held to thank nature and the river. This area is rich with impressive relationships between people and nature.

If you want to experience more of Sakon Nakhon city’s atmosphere, I recommend taking aslow ride on a tricycle around Sakon Nakhonto observe the local way of life and stop to try Taeyong Noodles, another delicious dish I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions from Kusuman
