Exciting Behind the Scenes of the Shrimp Parade in Ubon Ratchathani

When it comes to unique and thrilling travel experiences in Thailand, I, mr.hotsia, would like to recommend one of the most unique and almost unseen natural phenomena in Lower Isan: the “Shrimp Parade” at Kaeng Lamduan, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province.

Imagine these tiny shrimps facing the strong rapids of the rocky rapids. Driven by their reproductive instinct, they climb up the rocks and ascend above the water to lay their eggs. It is an exciting and beautiful sight because the shrimps are so numerous that they form a “parade,” walking in long lines like a living natural procession.

The best time to watch the shrimp parade is from mid-August to the end of September. On days with light rain, even more shrimps come out to parade. I recommend arriving at Kaeng Lamduan just before sunset and waiting to watch the shrimp parade around 7 PM, when you can see the shrimps climbing rocks and walking until late at night.

For the trip, I, mr.hotsia, suggest that if you stay in Ubon Ratchathani city, driving to Kaeng Lamduan takes less than two hours, about an hour and a bit, covering approximately 100 kilometers. If you prefer to stay in Nam Yuen town, it’s very convenient as Kaeng Lamduan is only about 20 minutes away.

An important caution from my personal experience is to avoid drinking any alcohol—liquor, wine, or beer—at Kaeng Lamduan because there are clear rules to maintain peace and order. You should bring a flashlight; the brighter, the better, as it helps you see the shrimp parade more clearly.

Connect with the fun and discover Ubon city

If you come to Ubon Ratchathani and want to experience local life and food, I, mr.hotsia, recommend stopping byThung Si MueangA public park in the city center popular among locals for exercise and evening relaxation. Thung Si Mueang has a great atmosphere, surrounded by canals, and offers traditional sports activities such as Sepak Takraw, basketball, and badminton. There is also a beautiful city pillar shrine, perfect for photos capturing the vibe of Ubon city.

If you’re hungry after returning from Kaeng Lamduan, I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying Ubon’s special soy milk breakfast with tofu foam and pomelo peel, which is hard to find elsewhere. Or if you want a simple, delicious, and quick dinner, the restaurantTee Amnuay Chok, Ubon’s top rice porridge restaurantis a great choice. I have eaten here since my Air Force days, and I’m still impressed on this visit.

For those who enjoy the atmosphere of fresh markets and want to taste authentic Vietnamese food in Ubon, I, mr.hotsia, recommendVietnamese pizza at Talad Yai (Big Market)which is a crispy yet soft Vietnamese steamed rice pancake with a unique flavor loved by many in Ubon.

Travel and Preparation

Nowadays, traveling to Ubon Ratchathani is much easier because there are direct flights from Ubon to Phuket byAirAsiawhich perfectly connects travel between Lower Isan and the South. For visiting Kaeng Lamduan, I recommend using a private car or rental car for convenience and flexible timing to watch the shrimp parade.

Before you go, I, mr.hotsia, remind you to avoid long holidays or weekends because it gets very crowded, which may spoil the natural atmosphere and peace. If you have the chance to visit on weekdays, you will enjoy a closer and fuller experience of the beauty.
