Missing Ubon When Eating Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup
When I think of Ubon Ratchathani province in my memory, one thing I never forget is the taste of the Vietnamese rice noodle soup here. It's not just a dish, but an experience that tells the story of the city and its people through the fragrant broth and the chewy noodles that you must try at least once when visiting Ubon.
The last time I traveled to Ubon Ratchathani, I chose to visit Simping Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup shop located in the Talad Yai area. It is a long-established restaurant recommended by locals. This shop has been open for a long time and still firmly maintains its original authentic flavor. The atmosphere is not fancy but warm, like eating at an old friend's home.
The Vietnamese rice noodle soup here is not just about the smooth noodles and rich, well-simmered broth. It also includes clean, fresh pork offal and fragrant Vietnamese pork sausage. The broth’s flavor is blended with a hint of Vietnamese spices, giving it an aroma unlike any other Vietnamese rice noodle soup I've had in Bangkok or elsewhere.
After tasting it, I felt like I traveled back in time to Ubon, the center of Lower Isan and Indochina, where Thai, Lao, Vietnamese, and Cambodian cultures blend harmoniously. Vietnamese rice noodle soup is one of the dishes that beautifully reflects this diversity.
It’s not only the taste that impressed me, but traveling here has become much easier now because Ubon Ratchathani has direct flights from Phuket via AirAsia, allowing me to travel from the south to Lower Isan without the hassle of connecting through Bangkok.Read more about Ubon-Phuket flights)
After enjoying the Vietnamese rice noodle soup, I didn’t miss a chance to stroll and digest at Thung Si Mueang, a central park in Ubon city. It’s a place where locals connect, often coming to jog, play takraw, or badminton in the evening. The peaceful atmosphere surrounded by canals makes you feel relaxed in an indescribable way.Read about Thung Si Mueang, Ubon Ratchathani)
Near the Vietnamese rice noodle soup shop in Talad Yai, there are many unusual foods for me to try, such as Vietnamese pizza made with crispy rice crackers as the base and filled with Vietnamese steamed dumplings. The taste is crispy outside, soft inside, topped with black sesame seeds adding a unique aroma.Vietnamese Pizza, Talad Yai, Ubon)
If you like to try Ubon-style breakfast, I recommend tasting soy milk with tofu skin and pomelo peel at Talad Yai as well. The soy milk here is extraordinary, rich, fragrant, and distinctly different from other places. The Best Soy Milk in Ubon Ratchathani)
Whenever I visit Ubon, no matter how many years pass, I still miss the taste of Vietnamese rice noodle soup at Simping first. Just like I miss the simple and warm lifestyle of the Isan people here. Eating this dish in a city full of stories and diverse cultures like Ubon is a small happiness I always intend to return for.
If you are planning to visit this province, don’t forget to set aside some time to explore Talad Yai and stop by Simping Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup shop. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed, mr.hotsia.
