Phra That Phanom: A Destination of Faith and Stories from Mr.Hotsia
The first time Mr.Hotsia traveled to visitPhra That PhanomNakhon Phanom Province, I must say it was an impressive experience, different from what I had imagined. Phra That Phanom is not just a tall, majestic stupa in the eyes of general tourists, but it is a profound story of faith and history deeply woven into the local community.
Phra That Phanom is located in That Phanom District, about 50 kilometers from Nakhon Phanom city. It may seem far for those planning a one-day city trip, but once you travel here, you will realize how worthwhile the visit is.
History as told by locals and Mr.Hotsia
I spent time talking with locals around the area, hearing stories not found in typical travel books. Phra That Phanom was originally built around Buddhist Era 500 by five arhats, a legend highly respected and believed by Buddhists. This stupa was constructed simultaneously with That Luang in Vientiane, Laos, reflecting the deep relationship between the two sides of the Mekong River.
On August 11, 1975, Phra That Phanom collapsed in a heartbreaking way—not leaning to one side but sinking straight down, causing no damage to nearby houses or people. I still clearly remember the heavy rain and loud sounds like gunfire that locals described. This event deeply shook the hearts of Nakhon Phanom residents and pilgrims alike.
Afterwards, excavations were conducted to find the old stupa in the area, according to the legend of the five arhats. Initially, there was doubt about the legend’s accuracy, but when the actual stupa was found as described, everything was confirmed true to the legend. Besides the Buddha’s relics, many valuable items and walls with carved Buddha images were discovered.
Phra That Phanom on the day Mr.Hotsia visited
The day I visited was bright and clear with a wide sky. The Phra That Phanom I saw was newly built to replace the collapsed original, yet it remained majestic and beautiful, towering prominently against the blue sky. I walked around the stupa area, feeling a peaceful atmosphere full of reverence. This is not just a tourist spot but a place where people sincerely come to pay respect.
My feeling then was one of calm and heartfelt fulfillment that cannot be found elsewhere. If you visit Nakhon Phanom Province, I highly recommend stopping by Phra That Phanom, the province’s main destination of faith.
Connecting with Nakhon Phanom and the Indochina trip
Nakhon Phanom offers more than just Phra That Phanom. The city itself has the charm of riverside life along the Mekong River that is truly captivating. I have written in an articleNakhon Phanomabout how walking along the Mekong Riverbank, looking across to the limestone mountains of the Lao border town of Tha Khaek, is a very impressive sight.
And if you have the chance, don’t miss a stroll atThe Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, Nakhon Phanom - Tha KhaekThis friendship bridge connects Thailand and Laos, opening a new dimension of travel in the Indochina region. Here you can visit two countries in one trip.
Food and markets to try after paying respect at Phra That Phanom
After touring the stupa and learning its history, I recommend tasting the diverse and delicious local food of Nakhon Phanom, especially the Vietnamese-influenced dishes perfectly blended in this province.Local cuisine of Nakhon Phanomincludes Khao Kriab Pak Mor, which I featured inthe video clip 'Khao Kriab Pak Mor Sri Thep Nakhon Phanom'to Pad Thai and spicy stir-fried holy basil with pork from street vendors.
If you visit Nakhon Phanom city, don’t forget to stop by the walking street to enjoy a chill atmosphere, shop for souvenirs or delicious local food from local restaurants, and try the unique Isan-style local rice whisky.Urenu Nakhon Whiskywhich I have also written about as an interesting cultural aspect.
