Mr.hotsia's Foolfish Trap Competition Anne On Tour Bang Bo

When it comes to traditional activities that I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to experience and record from my hometown inBang BoSamut Prakan Province, one of the fun memories I want to share is the foolfish trap competition, a local wisdom that deeply blends culture and riverside lifestyle.

That time, I had a trip with my close friend Anne, whom I've known for a long time. We started from Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Sangkhla Buri, and ended at my home in Bang Bo, which was a meaningful final stop because Anne and I intended to seriously try the foolfish trap competition.

The foolfish trap used is a traditional fish trap ring that locals in Bang Bo have used for a long time. I bought them from Bang Lee Market in Song Phi Nong for 800 baht, getting 30 brand-new rings ready for water. I divided two boats between myself and Thid Kae, while Anne took another boat. We set the traps for a full night.

The next morning, we gathered in front of my house to check the traps and see which side caught more fish. Thid Roeng, an expert on local fish, was appointed to judge the competition based on the total value of the fish caught.

The result was a narrow win for Anne. It was a fun event filled with laughter and the friendliness of the canal community. Anne and I plan to hold another foolfish trap competition soon in Chiang Khong.

Foolfish Traps and the Lifestyle of Bang Bo People

At my home, a lowland area by Samrong Canal in Bang Bo District, using foolfish traps to catch fish and shrimp is a long-standing tradition. Especially in shrimp farms mixed with native fish, the traps help locals select large shrimp without harming the fish.

Thid Kae, a local, told me that the key technique for foolfish trapping is to let part of the ring protrude above water to keep the trapped fish alive by allowing air. Also, the ring must be set close to the bottom to catch fish in that area, mostly gobies and shrimp. Smaller fish are caught using a lift net, which is more effective.

Ban Rakas Canal, the main Samrong Canal where I grew up, is an important community site for foolfish trapping. Many traps are placed throughout the canal. Locals rely on this method for daily fish catch, a lifestyle deeply connected to water and nature.

Memories from Bang Bo and the Old Market

Speaking of Bang Bo, we can't miss the old markets and the riverside way of life. Here are old waterfront markets that have preserved their original charm, such as Bang Bo Market and Bang Phli Market, both over a hundred years old. Locals still use boats to travel for buying and selling goods as in the past.150-Year-Old Bang Phli Old MarketIt is one of the examples of canal-side markets that still retain the atmosphere of the past very well.

I grew up around these canals and know the famous Bang Bo snakehead fish known nationwide.Bang Bo Snakehead FishThey are plump and have a special taste because the brackish water in the canal produces red plankton, a favorite food of the fish. These are things I have seen and experienced since childhood.

Overview and Meaning of the Foolfish Trap Competition

The foolfish trap competition is not just a game or contest; it is a continuation of the local wisdom of Bang Bo people. It is an activity that closely connects the new generation with traditional ways of life. Doing it myself with friends like Anne and Thid Kae made me feel the fun and value that cannot be found in typical commercial tourism.

If anyone visits Samut Prakan and wants to deeply experience local culture, try coming to Bang Bo and try foolfish trapping once. I guarantee you will get an experience beyond just tourism.
